alternate names

[edit]

For alternate names, should Johnny be included? Johnny in that spelling is the familial formation of John

[Jonathan|Jon|Jonnie] [John|Jack|Johnny]

-- Jon Talk | Message. 17:48, 3 June 2006

-> I have a question, why is Jake included as a nickname for Jonathan? It seems that Jake would go with Jacob. Juvenile1178 (talk) 00:41, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
-> I would like to add after much thought, I still cannot see a reason for Jake to be a nickname of Jonathan. And I move to remove Jake from the list of nicknames. Juvenile1178 (talk) 11:41, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
-> I see no one so far has objected to the proposal of removing Jake from the list of names derived from Jonathan. It has been a few months now, and I am making the change. Juvenile1178 (talk) 11:54, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Out of ignorance, the spelling is commonly "Johnny", and not "Jonny/Jonnie" --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 05:55, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Alphabetization

[edit]

I've alphabetized all of the "Famous Jonathans" and added one. I would suggest that if you add a name to this list, please put it where it belongs alphabetically. I'm anal about that sort of thing:) --Jechasteen 05:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Split

[edit]

I'm not sure which came first, but this page needs to be split into at least two. The biblical figure deserves his own article on Wikipedia free of any material on the name itself, except a link to the name article. Likewise, the name deserves its own article, especially since there is confusion over the relationship between Jonathan and John. I would prefer Jonathan (Biblical figure) and Jonathan as the article titles. -Acjelen 16:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

JB?

[edit]

How do you 'JB' out of Jonathan?

Jeez, that's some old vandalism. Thanks for pointing it out. I've removed it. TomTheHand 02:39, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought so.Kidcorona 03:32, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of people with first name Jonathan

[edit]

I've removed this list again. It is and will always be woefully incomplete and will never be anything than an indiscriminate list clogging the page. While there has been discussion about the format for dab pages about surnames, the given name pages only very rarely list these and the recent discussion on Julie has confirmed that the link to special:allpages is preferable. Pascal.Tesson 17:07, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unless someone is known only by this name (e.g. the Biblical Jonathan) it makes little sense to list them here, I agree. I'll remove this again. Jonathunder (talk) 03:05, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of Name

[edit]

"Whom Jehovah gave", "God's gift", "Gift of god" I added the last two since the first is not the only one. It would be biased to leave other common meanings out, as they are distinct and come from different histories. The name may mean either the act of giving or the state of having a gift, likewise to its roots. 69.229.120.173 17:25, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can't get "Gift of god" or "God's gift" out of "Jonathan"; any more than you can get "My Judge is somebody" out of "Daniel". I really don't think "Gift of God" is even possible here: maybe in the name "Nathan" which has no title/name based affix (but I'm no Hebrew scholar). Note that there are the names "Elnathan", and Nathanael. --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 06:01, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nathan

[edit]

I had always thought that Nate and Nathan came from Nathaniel? I had a couple of friends growing up named Nathaniel and we called one Nate and the other Nathan... ((Morethan3words | talk) 21:24, 17 February 2010 (UTC))[reply]

"Nate" is a modern, short form. "Nathan" means "gift from", so its not necessarily that one name is based off another: they're just names using a common Hebrew word. Nathaniel means "Gift of God", whereas "Elnathan" would mean "God has given/God's Gift". --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 06:17, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jonty, Jono, Joff, etc.

[edit]

Shall I countinue?   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 14:08, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can't think of a reason why "Joff" is a variant of Jonathan whereas the other two listed are. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:58, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Neither can I but "Jonathan" is his given name.   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 05:25, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Equivalent names

[edit]

There are several common names that are equivalent, possibly translations, for example Theodore - Fyodor, Bogdan. Shouldn't they be mentioned? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RosenneJ (talkcontribs) 20:04, 22 November 2022 (UTC) Jony (talk) 20:07, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
