Nationality
Jon Voight's grandfather was ethnical german - in german 'sudetenland' or 'sudetendeutsch' (see wikipedia). they lived there for almost 1000 years but nowadays it's cech territory and the germans were kicked out or even slaughtered after 1945. the name voigt is very common in eastern Germany - whereas the 'h' in Jon Voight's name was added to enable a convenient pronunciation of the former german name. Elisa
- elisa! please stop your propanda based editing in englisch and german wikipedia without valid sources! Their are enough examples of people having a name that doesn't correspond to their nationality! 25% of german family names have slavic origin, or do you think Dirk Nowitzki is Polish? Furthermore we are talking about eastern Slovakia, the minoritys over there are AFAIK mainly Hungarians, Ukranians and Gipsies. [Popolfi]--217.224.13.33 16:59, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Prove of German origin
Here's the latest info [from 28-8-07] on his daughter Angelina Jolie - maybe you can calculate a bit, Popofili:
[[1]]
In detail it says: " [...] blickt ihr Vater auf europäische Ahnen zurück. Seine Großeltern stammten beide aus Deutschland." Translate: "Her father's ancestors are european. Both his Grandparents are from Germany". Means: his Grandparents from mother's and father's side!
Nevertheless, Voigt IS a German name, and everyone here in Europe (on the continent, not so much in UK) has a little more knowledge about history and frontiers being drawn, but people not being moved (and keeping their ethnic background - US is different, we all know....ELISA —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.186.123.65 (talk) 11:08, August 29, 2007 (UTC)
@ Popofili
I am expecting an accurate excuse from your side, as you are spreading propaganda against me by not arguing with the subjetct itself but spreading tendential lies, no one can really check! ELISA —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.186.123.65 (talk) 11:23, August 29, 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Elisa, "web.de" is really a valid and elaborated source, why not a Micky Mouse Comic?!? BTW: I'm German and I know enough history to know that Slovakia never was a part of any German Empire not even of the Holy Empire! Seine Großeltern stammten beide aus Deutschland is 100% nonsense since Slovakia didn't even belong to Austria but to the Hungarian Crown - like the Shetlands belong to the Scottish and not to the English Crown. Among Chicagoans from the neighborhood it's well known that Voight's father was Jewish. This thread is comical. He did a Chabad telethon in California years ago and joked about how he was taught he wasn't Jewish by a classmate familiar with Halachah. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.218.46.208 (talk) 09:08, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Funny! Voights Mother was German-American! 8 )
- His paternal grandfather was a Slovak immigrant. His mother Barbara Kamp (born in New York, 7 January 1910 and died Palm Beach Co., Florida, 3 December 1995) was the daughter of Joseph Kamp, a German immigrant, and wife Margaret Franz, also the daughter of German immigrants. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000685/bio
- BTW: It's perfectly possible to be Jewish and German at the same time, but unlikely in Slovakia at that time ... --88.68.192.9 (talk) 18:59, 21 December 2008 (UTC)popolfi
Kosice was Austria back then
See [[2]] When his Grampa Voigt moved, he was a citizen of the Austrian Monarchy. But was of German ethnical background. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.186.123.65 (talk) 11:15, August 29, 2007 (UTC)

Voight being German...
Voight is a german name but I believe he was czech. Czechs and germans have always lived together in the sudentenland. That would explain the german name and czech ancestry. Can you verify that he is German? I am pretty sure his family heritage was Czech from the sudentenland.
- He is often confused with actor Christopher Walken. **
What kind of nonsense is this ?!? He looks / acts nothing at all like Christopher Walken! I wanted to delete this, but I have never edited anything on Wikipedia before and so I wasn't so brash as to do so. But if no one responds to this comment giving any kind of justification, I will go and delete that sentence.
Christopher Walken is in turn often confused with actor Dennis Leary... does this mean Jon Voight, Dennis Leary, and Christopher Walken all are confused for eachother?
Jon Voight is often confused with Christopher Walken, who is often confused with Dennis Leary, who is often confused with Willem Dafoe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.42.90.227 (talk) 18:48, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Rosewood
Voight also played in the movie Rosewood with Ving Rhames. This should be added to the filmography.
he also played in a movie called " a sleep of prisoners" which was aired on national television in 1964 or 1965. i am looking for a copy of this movie and would appreciate any help. thanks andy karpf,
For the person who denied that Voight is usually confused with Christopher Walken, consider that the only reason I am visiting Wikipedia, is to once and for all settle the dispute between me and my friends about the identity of Nicholas Cage's character's dad in the movie "National Treasure." We are divided 3 to 5, me being in the minority arguing that the role is played by Christopher Walken. A few minutes ago, I found out that I am wrong... as I was about the Character in the Movie "Holes"
Apparently, there are lots of people out there like me who think the two look alike and do confuse them with each other therefore, it's not Nonsensical.
Photo caption

Since his is the only full and recognisable face in the photo, does it matter who else was at the meeting with him? I don't think the others are worthy of mention. JackofOz 03:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Voight merits better than opening his bio with the "better known as the father of Angelina Jolie" stuff. Weak beginning for an entry on such an important actor. Given he had no hand in her upbringing, or any evident influence on her career, that familial link is worth merely a brief mention further down in the article.
- Funnily enough, had come here to say the same thing. And anyway it's a point of view, I'm a young person sort of and I best know Jon Voight as Jon Voight, the bloke from Midnight Cowboy. BennyFromCrossroads 22:39, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Jon voight was born to slovak - american family...
Jon Voight is the star of Midnight cowboy and father of Angelina Golie. He was born to Slovak - American family. His father was born in eastern Slovakia where Jon Voight went for holidays. There are few articles on the NET about his visits there. Interestingly Eastern Slovakia is a birth place to Andy Warhol parents too. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Georgeison (talk • contribs) 10:03, 10 February 2007 (UTC).
- Then how do you explain his German surname? I still think, he is of Sudeten-German ancestry, at least on his paternal side. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.255.38.124 (talk) 04:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC).
People need to realize that your surname may or may not have nothing to do with your ancestry. My surname is Freeburg, but my family is Norwegian.
Barbara Kamp was a sister to Joseph P. Kamp, both children of Joseph Kamp, a tailor orginally from Westphalia, Germany. --LC 19:29, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's true that Voight or Vogt are very common names in Germany, but it most likely originates from latin "Advocatus" [3], it's the title of an administrative official you find in wide areas of central europe and not necessarily speaking German. Beside German spellings their are plenty of Slavic forms like "Voitka" or "Wojt". The only valid possibility to find out "ethnicity" is to find out what language Jon Voight's grandparents were speaking at home [4], does anybody have a time machine??? ;-) Anyway the administrativ language of the time of his emmigration was Hungarian. Maybe (!?!) he was a Carpatian German [5] (not Sudeten German) and MOST LIKELY he was multilingual. Popolfi --217.224.55.163 (talk) 14:28, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Recent Career
There's a difference between being negative and telling the truth, and the article needs a little bit of the latter. The truth is Voight hasn't been in a decent movie in years and continues, for reasons unfathomable, to play roles in terrible, terrible, movies. Case in Point: Superbabies 2, Karate Dog, Bratz. What is the man thinking? JyL 18:36, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Its really obvious to this reader that the author of this section of this bio of Voight is left-leaning politically. Making digs because a person does not follow your idealogy is not appropriate for a bio on wiki. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.226.29.145 (talk) 02:18, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism of Birthplace?
According to 69.253.3.40 on March 10, who has a vandalism history, Voight was born in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. However, source 1 clearly sttes he was born in Yonkers. Also, I live in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, and am sure Jon Voight was not born here; nothing exciting ever happens here. Looking at 69.253.3.40's previous edits I am sure he/she lives in my area. 98.225.237.119 (talk) 20:10, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the chuckle! Aren't you guys near Atlantic City? And isn't Dave Thomas from there? ;) As for the first footnote in this article, that links to a mirror site of Wikipedia. In other words, the bio there is a reproduction of a previous version of this very article. As such, it is not actually an authoritative reference for this article, so I am removing it.
- The New York Times gives Yonkers as his birthplace, so anybody encountering any other birthplace without a more notable source referenced for the change should revert it to Yonkers with "Vandalism" cited in your edit summary. Abrazame (talk) 00:59, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps his comments about Obama have stirred up a hornets nest of dissatisfaction among the loyalists. I hope that WP:BLP is being as carefully protected as some others have been lately.--Jojhutton (talk) 01:16, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
In June 2010, the Washington Times published An open letter to President Obama from Jon Voight in which the actor wrote that "you play a very dangerous game so you can look like a true martyr to what you see and say are the underdogs. … Your destruction of this country may never be remedied, and we may never recover. I pray to God you stop, and I hope the people in this great country realize your agenda is not for the betterment of mankind, but for the betterment of your politics." Central Texas Connection?
Does Jon Voight have early-life ties to a small town in Central Texas? I cannot recall the name of the town; only that it starts with an "R", and it is very near another small town outside of Austin named "Bastrop". George Voytka
George Voytka was clearly of German descent, considerung the German colonization of Kaschau since the 13th Century. Family Voigt was probably (like millions throughout the history of German expansion to the east) forced to change their German surname into Voytka after the German-Austrian monarchy lost power in that region. After coming to the USA, George Voytka changed his surname back to the original, Voigt. In Poland and Russia, i. e., millions of Germans were ordered to assimilate (including change of surname) or leave the countries. 91.65.19.167 (talk) 01:27, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- George Voytka (or Voytko) identified himself as Slovak in a U.S. census, so that's what we're going with. He never changed his name, his American-born sons did. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 05:56, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- I checked the footnote "Angelina Jolie's ancestry" on which the Slovak ancestry is based on and I also have to say, that it only proves the birthplace Kassa/Košice, which belonged back than to Hungary and is now in Slowakia. But back than neither Hungarians nor Slowaks were the majority in the town, but ethnic Germans. So there is a probability there. Also the explanation with the surname sounds plausible. There is nobody in today's fix line telephone directory in Slowakia (see http://telefonny.zoznam.sk/) with the name Voytka or Voytko, indicating that it is not a Slowakian name. Obviously all people who carried this surname in Slowakia emigrated or changed it to something else, when it was possible. Voight by the way means this in German: de:Vogt. --El bes (talk) 11:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
- No, the claim is sourced to footnote 4, which says Voight's grandfather identified as Slovak. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 12:52, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, that footnote I didn't see before. --El bes (talk) 08:53, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Lack of Military Service?
What's is the story on military service? Did he ever serve in any way? How did he make it through the cold war, Korea and Vietnam without any participation? Please add some detail tot he main page on this. 125.24.193.99 (talk) 00:26, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
Ridiculous sentence
The section 2010s begins as follows:
"In 2013, Voight made his much-acclaimed appearance on Ray Donovan as Mickey Donovan, the main character's conniving father. He received a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film in 2014 for his work on Ray Donovan."
The phrase "his appearance" makes no sense here, because Voight has been a regular on that series for many years.
Maybe this is attempting to refer to Voight's first appearance in that series? (The word "appearance" does not mean "first appearance". The word "debut" does mean "first appearance".)
But if so, then his first appearance was not particularly "much-acclaimed".
I hope someone knowledgeable about this subject can rewrite this section so it doesn't sound like it was written by a publicity agent with a poor command of English. 98.255.224.144 (talk) 18:27, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Isn't the math wrong?
If Mr. Voight was born in 1938. And he went to Israel in 2008. Would this not have made him SEVENTY years of age?? Why would he then have commemorated his Sixieth birthday?
Is someone able to clarify? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.128.7.82 (talk) 18:03, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- Voight wasn't talking about HIS birthday, but rather about Israel's birthday. The nation of Israel, as we know it today, came into being in 1948, hence the reference to its 60th Birthday being in 2008.OrdinaryAverageTy (talk) 02:10, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
