"confessed"

[edit]

I fear this English article has been written by a native Dutch-speaker who failed to have it checked first by a native English-speaker. Since the topic is so sensitive and controversial, careful use of English is surely vital. We're told that Jomanda's assistant "confessed" on Dutch television that things were not as people had been led to believe. Unfortunately, "confessed" implies that a crime was committed, whereas the TV programme was not a court of law. You might also use "confessed" if a married person were to reveal an extramarital affair to his or her spouse. There's a sense that the person was under strong emotional pressure to retract an earlier statement, and finally did so. The correct English word in this context is not "confessed" but "admitted". This suggests just as clearly that things were not as people had been led to believe, but leaves the reader to judge whether anything immoral or criminal had been done. Personally I think it had, but Wikipedia articles should of course be written in as neutral a style as possible. Unfortunately, this is precisely the kind of thing that happens when - as all too often! - people write Wikipedia articles in languages that are not their own.213.127.210.95 (talk) 17:55, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
