Musing on the Social Affect of Wikipedia and Trivia

[edit]

This article is a good illustration of how Wikipedia has changed the social dynamic of trivia. Prior to Wikipedia, trivia, like the game of Johnny Whoop, was passed mostly by word of mouth in an ad-hoc way. Now, you can actually look it up and learn about it just like serious scientific information. I think a consequence of that is we are losing some of the social aspect. For example, when I was younger, we played Johnny Whoop a lot more than folks today. Now, when you hear some reference to it, you don't have to go to someone else to figure out just how it is played, you just get on Google and up pops the wikipedia article. Is this the same affect as how the internet affects all aspects of social behavior in general, or is trivia a little different? What do you think? 174.105.142.197 (talk) 20:55, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
