Started half of their games?

[edit]

I heard on Sportscenter this evening that Sain and Spahn combined to start over half of Boston's games in (I think) the 1948 season. I think this is pretty noteworthy and deserves to be in here somewhere. Mientkiewicz5508 01:36, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well for one thing, teams used a four-man rotation in those days, so between the two of them they would have pitched half the games just by staying uninjured and on rotation all season. I think this may be referring to the stretch in September where the other starters’ (Bickford, Barrett) turns keep getting rained out. According to Retrosheet, Spahn and Sain end up starting 8 of the Braves’ 10 games from Sept. 6 to 18, and 15 of 22 through the end of the season.
