- NOTE: Per William Mero of the John Marsh Historic Trust: "Contrary to the information Wikipedia presents of Marsh going to San Francisco for a political meeting is not why he was going to San Francisco. Marsh was going into San Francisco for two main reasons and nothing political! The first was to pay the building contractor for finishing his stone mansion near Brentwood (probably carrying somewhere between $5,000-10,000 to pay off his debts. The second reason was to meet the San Francisco Police and his his hired range detective, Fugate, to have them personally arrest some cattle thieves who were expected to arrive later at the San Francisco docks with a ship load of Marsh's slaughtered cattle. Of course this didn't happen."

Marsh was a rather important figure in California history before the Gold Rush. I think the importance of this article should be raised to at least MID. Bruin2 (talk) 00:57, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
FIRST PERSON TO PRACTICE MEDICINE IN CALIFORNIA
[edit]Under the section titled Life in California it is claimed Marsh is credited with being the first person to practice medicine in California. Are we to believe the Native Americans that had lived in the area for thousands of years practiced no form of medicine? 47.156.135.194 (talk) 20:57, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
