Listing of works in lead

[edit]

John Leguizamo filmography gives the complete list. Anything mentioned in the lead should be particularly notable as in works he got an award from, not just a random selection of some with explanation of why they are more important than any of the others. Adding "Colombian-born" in the lead

[edit]

Hi everyone. There was recently a dispute regarding the addition of "Colombian-born" in the lead. I cite two strong reasons why I see that it should not be added. Firstly, per Wikipedia guidelines on the format of biographies and their leads (as stated in WP:Ethnicity), place of birth, previous nationalities, and/or ethnicity should not be included in the lead unless directly relevant to the subject's notability. As someone who immigrated when he was a toddler to the United States, I think it is fair to say that his Colombian birth has little to do with his notability as an American comedian/actor/etc (considering he achieved all of his notability in the United States). Furthermore, he himself affirms his nationality as "American" in the following URL: https://www.npr.org/2017/04/12/523631629/actor-john-leguizamo-s-career-goal-to-give-latino-kids-their-own-heroes which is from an NPR interview transcript with the subject. I'd like to add this as a citation to the article and looked up the Wikipedia guidelines on this, but am slightly embarrassed to admit that I am new to adding citations and so am not sure how. I believe it is in the format below, but please correct me if I am wrong.

"Actor John Leguizamo's Career Goal: To Give Latino Kids Their Own Heroes". NPR. April 12, 2017. Retrieved October 21, 2019.

If you disagree and think that we should add "Colombian-born" to the lead, I'd like to know your reasons and see whether they comply with the Wikipedia regulations as stated in WP:Ethnicity. I would like to give people a chance to voice their opinions for the next few days. I hope we can reach a consensus. Apoorva Iyer (talk) 22:15, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I concur. His birth location is irrelevant to his notability so mention of it is not appropriate for intro sentence. It was added by this edit, I reverted that restoring article to state it was stable as before that edit. Geraldo Perez (talk) 22:30, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I also concur. Kay girl 97 (talk) 02:46, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DNA test results

[edit]

A correction: Leguizamo's DNA test results, as presented on Finding Your Roots, were not 3.1% North African, but 3.1% Middle Eastern / North African. Based on these results it is, thus, not impossible that he might have some Lebanese or Italian ancestry (contrary to the editorializing presented in the current version of the article). 173.88.246.138 (talk) 22:43, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Birth year

[edit]

For most of his career, Leguizamo’s birth year was listed as 1964. However, it seems that now, it is being listed as 1960. Which one is correct? 208.127.190.114 (talk) 21:09, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The current one with the latest source. Check it out. Geraldo Perez (talk) 22:01, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other sources regarding birth year

[edit]

Besides Finding Your Roots, are there other reliable sources that give 1960 as his birth year? I found one source but I’m not sure if it’s reliable. https://www.qchron.com/qboro/i_have_often_walked/leguizamo-elmhurst-s-versatile-hollywood-veteran/article_3f90d3af-46ad-5c0b-83f8-7eae8258b349.html 2600:100C:A215:E059:452B:29C6:C065:F9C0 (talk) 01:03, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Both the article and your source says, 1960 - FlightTime (open channel) 01:25, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm dubious about the reliability of the source and where it got the information. Current reference is reliable and is sufficient to support the information. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:27, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Misrepresentation, he is Colombian

[edit]

The argument that he left at 3 yo doesn’t change the fact he is a Colombian actor, just add it to avoid future debates, the article is not representing him fully. Danmute (talk) 02:15, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See the "Early life" section of the article. Article covers his birth location sufficiently and the fact he left for the US at age 3. He's done nothing notable in Columbia, all his notable activities are in the US as an American actor during the 60 years he has resided in the US as an American. See MOS:CONTEXTBIO for what goes in intro and lead, birth location is only there if part of why notable, it is not in his case. Geraldo Perez (talk) 02:57, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn’t change the fact that he is Colombian. The article is clearly misrepresenting him for a bias point of view of yours, he calls himself a Colombian Puerto Rican, A Latino living in America… not an American actor as the article says. I respectfully request that you add that fact. Instead of deleting facts lets add them!!!! Danmute (talk) 15:21, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no bias in the article, it is just following the Wikipedia Manual of Style with respect to what goes in the intro sentence and lead. Nothing is being misrepresented in the article and all sourced information about his ancestry, ethnicity, and birth location is covered in the "Early life and education" section of article where it appropriately belongs. It doesn't belong in the lead section of the article at all as that has nothing to do with his notability and notable activities. He is an "American actor" as that accurately reflects his nationality and where he did his notable work. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:48, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Normally, this would not be such an issue. But given that this guy makes his "identity" the basis of 99% of his shtick, it matters. 70.120.245.43 (talk)
He makes his identity more generically "Latinx" per the article and he did claim Puerto Rican ancestry as well through his father (not confirmed via DNA testing though) so that was culturally important to him too. The Early life and Activism sections covers this in detail. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An interview indicates 1964 is his birth year

[edit]

In an interview in 1999 with Bobbie Wygant, Leguizamo says he was 13 years old in 1977. You can watch it on YouTube below. Around 2:10. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze5mC-UHWG8&list=LL&index=20&t=10s&pp=gAQBiAQB Annijohnson (talk) 01:19, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
