Different Maud MacCarthy

[edit]

The Maud MacCarthy described in the link (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Maud_McCarthy) was not the wife of John Foulds. 194.109.233.151 07:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. The error has been fixed by another editor. Cheers, Jacklee 12:35, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maud MacCarthy redux

[edit]

Maud MacCarthy is also spelled Maud McCarthy in this article (twice each). The wikilink of Maud MacCarthy goes to a McCarthy name, but the content in that article uses MacCarthy in defiance of its title. Not sure what's right, but something appears wrong in both, or at least inconsistent without explanation of the variation. Michael Devore 05:31, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for spotting the discrepancy. I'm not sure, but the following news article (referred to in the Wikipedia article) spells it "MacCarthy": Culshaw, Peter (2006-04-26). "Visionary Genius of the Spirit World". The Daily Telegraph. {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help) Cheers, Jacklee 21:13, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have Foulds' book, Music To-day: she is mentioned several times as "MacCarthy". Of course "Mac" and "Mc" are often confused, but I think he would have known which it was! Cenedi 21:50, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cenedi, in that case, you may want to move "Maud McCarthy (Omananda Puri)" to "Maud MacCarthy (Omananda Puri)". By the way, planning to attend the performance of A World Requiem on 11 November at the Royal Albert Hall in London? I am. Cheers, Jacklee 22:37, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed occurrences of "McCarthy" in the article to "MacCarthy". Cheers, Jacklee 22:58, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, bother. Just got back from the performance of A World Requiem at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 November 2007. Throughout the programme Foulds' wife's name is indicated as "Maud McCarthy". Does that mean that is the correct spelling? — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:40, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I overheard someone ask Malcolm MacDonald about this after the concert and he said his notes for the programme had the "Mac" spelling, which was correct, and the "Mc" must have been a late editorial change - "God knows why!" Cenedi 10:19, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't it lucky you were there to hear the remark! Guess we'll stick to "MacCarthy" then. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:47, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was one of several people waiting to have a word with him. The person asking the question was an oldish man who said he had known Maud MacCarthy in her old age and had sometimes acted as her chauffeur - he had a copy of one of her books with him. Cenedi 12:50, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Composer project review

[edit]

I've reviewed this article as part of the Composers project review of its B-class articles. This article is B-class, but suffers from some non-trivial defects; read my full review on the comments page. Questions and comments can be left here or on my talk page. ==Composers Project Assessment of John Foulds: 2008-12-22==

This is an assessment of article John Foulds by a member of the Composers project, according to its assessment criteria. This review was done by Magicpiano.

If an article is well-cited, the reviewer is assuming that the article reflects reasonably current scholarship, and deficiencies in the historical record that are documented in a particular area will be appropriately scored. If insufficient inline citations are present, the reviewer will assume that deficiencies in that area may be cured, and that area may be scored down.

Adherence to overall Wikipedia standards (WP:MOS, WP:WIAGA, WP:WIAFA) are the reviewer's opinion, and are not a substitute for the Wikipedia's processes for awarding Good Article or Featured Article status.

===Origins/family background/studies=== Does the article reflect what is known about the composer's background and childhood? If s/he received musical training as a child, who from, is the experience and nature of the early teachers' influences described?

  • ok

===Early career=== Does the article indicate when s/he started composing, discuss early style, success/failure? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • Sketchy on personal details; little on his early composing.

===Mature career=== Does the article discuss his/her adult life and composition history? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • ok

===List(s) of works=== Are lists of the composer's works in WP, linked from this article? If there are special catalogs (e.g. Köchel for Mozart, Hoboken for Haydn), are they used? If the composer has written more than 20-30 works, any exhaustive listing should be placed in a separate article.

  • List of works is claimed to be "selected", despite its length.

===Critical appreciation=== Does the article discuss his/her style, reception by critics and the public (both during his/her life, and over time)?

  • ok

===Illustrations and sound clips=== Does the article contain images of its subject, birthplace, gravesite or other memorials, important residences, manuscript pages, museums, etc? Does it contain samples of the composer's work (as composer and/or performer, if appropriate)? (Note that since many 20th-century works are copyrighted, it may not be possible to acquire more than brief fair use samples of those works, but efforts should be made to do so.) If an article is of high enough quality, do its images and media comply with image use policy and non-free content policy? (Adherence to these is needed for Good Article or Featured Article consideration, and is apparently a common reason for nominations being quick-failed.)

  • Images ok; no sound; discography given.

===References, sources and bibliography=== Does the article contain a suitable number of references? Does it contain sufficient inline citations? (For an article to pass Good Article nomination, every paragraph possibly excepting those in the lead, and every direct quotation, should have at least one footnote.) If appropriate, does it include Further Reading or Bibliography beyond the cited references?

  • I find it strange that his principal biography is not a reference source. Few inline citations.

===Structure and compliance with WP:MOS=== Does the article comply with Wikipedia style and layout guidelines, especially WP:MOS, WP:LEAD, WP:LAYOUT, and possibly WP:SIZE? (Article length is not generally significant, although Featured Articles Candidates may be questioned for excessive length.)

  • ok

===Things that may be necessary to pass a Good Article review===

  • Article requires more inline citations (WP:CITE)

===Summary=== I find the man described in this bio to be interesting; however, there are some issues with it. There are some lapses into WP:PEACOCK territory that his proponents would do better to avoid (particularly the uncited Legacy section). We don't learn much about his early composing; is this because it is poorly documented? I note that his principal scholarly biography is not cited as a reference; gaps of this sort are hard to believe when these types of sources are evidently available. We find that he married, and then much later in the article, that he was married (with children, no less) before that marriage; we don't find out what happened to wife #1. (The Personal Life section should be folded into the rest of the bio.)

The set of works listed is impressive, but is described as being "selected". A complete (known) works list should be compiled, and listed in a separate article; the list here should be much shorter. I also note, from discussion on the talk page, that Foulds apparently wrote at least one book; this is never mentioned in the article, or listed in a bibliography.

The article has few inline citations, and does not claim to use the MacDonald biography as a source (even though MacDonald is quoted).

Article is B-class; main defects are works list, lack of citations, and poorly-documented early years. Magic♪piano 01:32, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
