Polynesian empire?

[edit]

Wasn't the proper term Polynesian Confederation?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:14, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. Various sources call it different things. Have not seen the actual agreement, not even clear what language it was in. Certainly its critics called it an "empire" since nominally Laupepa was meant to effectively a vassal to Kalākaua. But that might be considered taking a point of view, I suppose, since it was used generally in a sarcastic grandiose tone. ... Checking the "Kingdom" book, Kuykendall does use the word "empire" a few times, but when he refers to the actual agreement it is called "Polynesian Confederation". Since this goes live in a few hours, I will go ahead and change it now in the heading. W Nowicki (talk) 18:11, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I remembering reading somewhere that it was really costly for Kalakaua to actually create this plan for a confederation. I have no idea that alliance cost money back then. I thought it was just signing of paper and the only cost would be if one had to support another in war.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:31, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it was $30000 that the legislature had to grant.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:35, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well I avoided absolute numbers in the article because 1887 dollars have no meaning to me, and I suspect to most readers. But we do try to allude to the costs: refitting the ship, all the uniforms and decorations, two ship-loads of gin and champaign, and a promised "salary" to Laupepa , etc. This could be expanded, and put in context with the subsequent loans from Spreckles that kept the government afloat, but this section is already a good chunk of the article. Now the Kalakaua article itself could use some more of this. W Nowicki (talk) 16:57, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
