Ref check

[edit]
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 1, Bowen 685
Covers birth date, his parents, immigration to America, siblings, their move to Michigan... it does cover moving to Hillsdale County in 1856 indirectly (when he was aged 6). I don't see anything about the Erie Canal - was this from another source? I also see nothing about logging wheels or timber representatives.
 Done --Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:04, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Covers his 120-acre parcels. Covers him and his brother being the first settlers.
Covers Martha's date of death, as well as his diversified system of farming.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 2, Bingham 140
Covers his various positions.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 3, Michigan 1899
Covers father's farm in summers, school in winters. Says that he went north to the woods for four years at age 17, but article (cited to Ref 3) says he went north for 2 years at age 19?
Done Corrected to follow source that he went north to the woods for four years at age 17.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:04, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Covers Republicanness and election to state House.
Covers county treasurerness, and clearing 80 acres of timber.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 4, USSC 1917
Covers him going to Missaukee County in 1869.
  • Gray check markYg Ref 5, Cadillac Evening News
My kung-fu is weak and I can't figure out how to get this one. Have you got a link? I'll AGF on it anyway if all it's doing is giving a specific date for the marriage and backing up something also backed up by Ref 6 and 4.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 6, Journal-Miner
Doesn't have a whole lot about what he did in his capacity as an agent of Mitchell's company. Also, if this happened in 1901, shouldn't it be further down?
Done Information is in the correct place. Caldwell was a land agent for Mitchell Brothers buying and selling timber. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:32, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gray check markYg Ref 7, Document 22451
Seems to be an offline source, but the only thing this covers is mentioned by another source, so it's fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 8, McGinnis 21-22
Covers old-growth white pine.
  • Gray check markYg Ref 9, Blenz 201
AGF on offline source.
  • Ref (N/A), Acts 149
Couldn't find this source.
Done Replaced with another book reference. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:36, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 10, Romig 1986, p93
Covers the namesake of the township.
  • Ref (N/A), Counties 5, 13, 35
The instances of "Caldwell" I see on page ix and page vii say that these counties are named for John Caldwell Calhoun, not this John Caldwell.
 Done Removed this reference.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:08, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, I should have finished this earlier, subsequent edits have changed the ref order. Will re-arrange... jp×g 20:55, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 11, Mecosta County
Checks out fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 12, Bowen 686
Backs up death date and also him being a member of Missaukee Grange.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 13, Pensioners 1883
Checks out fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 14, Lansing State Journal 1950
Checks out fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 15, House 1899 p5
Checks out fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 16, House 1897 p3-5
Checks out fine.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 17, Michigan Manual 1900
Checks out fine.
  • Gray check markYg Ref 18, Escanaba Tribune 1900
Will AGF for offline source.
  • Green checkmarkY Ref 19, Missaukee County 1900
Checks out.
  • Blue question mark? Ref 20, Attorney General 1911
Checks out, but it seems like he asked the attorney general about a specific ordinance passed by one township, not a state law about hunting deer; should be edited to reflect that. jp×g 21:36, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(References rearranged after this point by editing of article, will not attempt to re-number all of them going backwards)
  • Blue question mark? Ref 20, Roland Winter
I can't figure this one out: is there a name for this specific record, or is it being cited to Mr. Winter himself?
  • Gray check markYg Ref 21, Certificate 2245
Offline source, but this seems to be well backed up by a few other sources. Perhaps one of them could be added?
  • Gray check markYg Ref 22, Wexford County Recorder
Looks fine, AGFing. Is there an address?
  • Gray check markYg Ref 23, Census 1920
AGF on offline source.
  • Gray check markYg Ref 24, Cadillac Evening News 1916
AGF on offline source.
  • Blue question mark? Ref 25, Manton Tribune 1916
AGF on offline source, but should two separate newspaper articles be in the same ref note?
  • Blue question mark? Ref 26, Cemetery location
I don't know how viable this is as a source (and the things it's saying are backed up by other sources), would recommend just cutting it.
  • Blue question mark? Ref 27, Cadillac Area Genealogical Society
AGF on offline source.

  • Blue question mark? Some of the pictures are placed pretty far from when they're referenced. For example, his mother's gravestone is referenced with "(pictured)" way up near the top, and the actual image appears way down at the bottom. The picture of his house appears in the section above the one that says "(pictured)".
  •  Done
  • Red X symbolN What is going on with File:John birth record.jpg? Why is it stitched together from a number of separate scans, with "1849" written on in an image editing program? Can we get the original image?
  •  Done
I see that there's a new image, which looks a little better, but it still seems to be substantially edited. Have you got the full original scanned image of the record out of the file you've got? If all you've got to go from is the PDF (which I recall you mentioning), you can e-mail it to me and I'll extract it. jp×g 14:58, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: Thanks for the copy editing. Yes, I will be glad to send you the PDF that the town of Ridgeway sent me July 15, 2021. Just send me an email through Wikipedia and then I can send back to you the attachment to your email address.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:49, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: I've emailed to you the scan as the town clerk gave to me on July 15, 2021. It is exactly as I show in the article. The scanned images have not been substantially edited or altered and are true and accurate scans. I have a vested interest in getting this exactly correct to show that John Caldwell's given name at birth was "George Washington" and that his father's name is John Caldwell and that his mother's name is Jane Caldwell. That is the best I can do, unless you are willing to send me an email and I will forward back to you the communications email from the town clerk verifying these are true scans. I will include the PDF she sent me, which is what I have already sent to you. You can then email the town clerk (or call her) and verify that these are true scans. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:19, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: The town clerk of Ridgeway (where the 1849 birth record of John Caldwell is located) sent me this message on July 15, I am sorry to say that the only information that I have is the exact same image that you already have. I see no alterations in the original. If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know. If you will send me an email, then I can forward this thread to you (with her contact information) and you can contact her by phone or email to verify these scans are the true image as I am showing in the article. I have a vested interest in this to get it exactly correct and it is very important to me to show this correctly as I am showing in the article. I recommend that you either contact the town clerk, fail the nomination, or promote the article to Good Article status (highly recommended). Thanks again for the latest improvements you made to the article.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:47, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: I had a lot of email communications with the Deputy Town Clerk of Ridgeway about this record and the scans as I show them in the article. If you would call her or email her, she can verify that the scans are true and correct as I show them in the article. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:25, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: The original 1849 black & white scan image I provided has been verified by the town clerk of Ridgeway as being correct of the information they have in their records. Since you are not willing to contact the town clerk and are not willing to accept the images I have provided, then I would recommend you just fail the nomination. Apparently you want an image of your choice that has not verified by the town clerk of Ridgeway as true and correct of the information they have. That would not give the correct information and would be a distortion of facts. I highly recommend that you promote the article to Good Article status, since it has met all the requirements, or just fail the nomination. Then I can resubmit it GAN and get an experienced reviewer and they will just promote the article to Good Article status since it meets all the requirements. I have had 175 of my articles promoted to Good Article status and I have created over 500 Did You Know articles with images. I know what a correct image is and the 1849 original image I provided as John Caldwell's birth record is correct. It has even been verified by the town clerk of Ridgeway as being correct and having the same information they have in their records. Please promote the article to Good Article status and follow up with the necessary final steps -OR- fail the nomination, so I can resubmit GAN and get an experienced reviewer and they then will promote the article to Good Article status. I have had 22 of my GAN articles promoted to Good Article status this month and am aiming for 30 -> so I will not be playing around with this one any longer, as it now has become a waiste of time. I want to do something constructive with my time, like getting more Good Articles. It so happens that during last year's GAN drive that happened in two months (that had 31 days each) I got 62 articles promoted to Good Article status. So, as you can see I made on average one Good Article per day. All these articles were reviewed by several different top reviewers that have much experience. All the top reviewers in the GAN arena know me and the quality of articles I produce. All I have to do is get one of these to review this article and it will be promoted to Good Article status. See you later, I'm off to get more Good Articles. Thanks for your time.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 10:16, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: I have a vested interest in getting this correct. Thanks for your understanding. The Deputy Town Clerk of Ridgeway (where the 1849 birth record of John Caldwell is located) sent me this message on July 15, I am sorry to say that the only information that I have is the exact same image that you already have. I see no alterations in the original. If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know. Good idea!--Doug Coldwell (talk) 10:57, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: Keep in mind that his tombstone (pictured in article) gives a birth date of July 4, 1849. It has been etched in stone.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:43, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: Keep in mind that I have emailed you the scan as the Deputy Town Clerk of Ridgeway has sent to me in a PDF. If you will send me an email I can then forward to you at your personal email address the thread of the communication (with the PDF scanned image) that I had with her. Then you can call her or email her to verify that the image I am using in the article is correct for the information they have on record, that was put in their public records for anyone to see on July 4, 1849.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:07, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: I have forwarded the communications I had with the Deputy Town Clerk of the town of Ridgeway (New York). This includes her contact information. Let me know if you need anything else to get the article promoted to Good Article status. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:39, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JPxG: I have also forwarded to your personal email address additional communications I had with the Town Clerk of the town of Ridgeway (New York). As you can see she has verified that the image I am showing in the article has the same information as they have in their records. Will that work? --Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:58, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I had some medical issues the last few days -- thought I was gonna be fully back, but then had to deal with some more stuff. Anyway, I've gotten the email... it's weird that they sent you this instead of a full scan, but I guess we've got to make do with what we've got! I'm fine to promote this article now, although I will probably shoot over an email and see if I can get the full page. jp×g 22:13, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Conclusion

[edit]
Sorry for taking so long to get around to this (stuff kept coming up). I've done some copyediting, but there is one thing that remains. jp×g 14:58, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
