Quick suggestion
[edit]I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, but one thing does grab my attention right away: The upper right image is really huge. Could it be cropped maybe? That way we could have more of a closeup of him. Otherwise, you should probably have "Murphy (right)..." to clarify which guy he is (I'm assuming he's the one on the right because that guy's bigger :P).
I also notice that a lot of sections, paragraphs, and sentences begin with "He". Maybe you could mix it up a bit, and at least for the start of sections, use "Murphy" instead. delldot talk 12:30, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- I also noticed that the caption wasn't broken into to lines, which forced the infobox to be stretched out, squishing the rest of the article. To fix this, I just added a line break. Now the box should be properly deflated. --Qmwne235 23:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
One more: I noticed that there are a lot of short sentences, which make it read kind of choppy. For example: He then practiced there briefly. From 1882–1884 he performed practical work at universities and hospitals in Vienna, Munich, Berlin and Heidelberg. Most of this time was spent working with Theodor Billroth in Vienna. Then, he returned to Chicago to take of general practice. I get that it's difficult to deal with this if you don't want those pesky mid-sentence refs, though. delldot talk 19:36, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Baccalaureate?
[edit]did he do an undergraduate degree? if so, where?Toyokuni3 (talk) 22:17, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- All educational information that I found is included in the article. They guy grew up in a log cabin. Maybe he went to one of those old one-room schoolhouses.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 13:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Popularizing?
[edit]i was unaware that appendectomies were particularly popular today, musch less in 1912.' what are you doing this weekend? nothin'. wanna get an appendectomy? you gonna get one? sure!ok count me in.' —Preceding unsigned comment added by Toyokuni3 (talk • contribs) 03:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Christian Finger???
[edit]the infobox lists his influences as theodor billroth (of course) and 'christian finger'. the only reference i can find to christian finger is to a rock band. is my knowledge of history of medicine that deficient, or is this vandalism?Toyokuni3 (talk) 05:37, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Look at the original fivve refs in the article. I think it comes from one of those five.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 13:48, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm certain that his influence was Christian Fenger, who was a Danish-born Surgeon and Pathologist who lectured Murphy at Rush- google the name for his 1908 obituary- also basing this on the 1938 biography by Davis 'Surgeon Extraordinary', Thurwood's 'The Triumph of Surgery' and Cartwright's 'The Development of Modern Surgery". I have made this edit. Nucleicmilkshake (talk) 14:16, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Murphy vs. Murphy's
[edit]we need to make this consistent on the eponyms. on signs, it's generally right either way, but it needes to be consistent. on instruments, it's usually without the possessive. 'give me a kelly (crile, halstead, deaver, murphy bone skid, etc.Toyokuni3 (talk) 14:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC))'.
- You obviously know medical terminology. I am just a guy who works on Chicago articles. When I was looking for images for Prairie Avenue at the Library of Congress, I noticed some this guy because the hospital is on Prairie Avenue. Feel free to make whatever edit is necessary to be consistent with practical usage of the terminology.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 15:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Look here and see inconsistent usage as follows: "Other eponyms associated with him include Murphy drip, Murphy’s button, Murphy’s punch, Murphy’s test, and Murphy-Lane bone skid."--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 15:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Obsolescence
[edit]is it necessary, or even desirable, to mention that the murphy button and murphy drip are long since obsolete?Toyokuni3 (talk) 16:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- If it provides information to the reader WP:PRESERVE it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 06:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
