Early Life Section: Sisters and Children of John Armstrong, Sr

[edit]

How is DAR used as a source to cite sisters of John Armstrong, Sr? DAR is only working to document his children, not his sisters. We will remove DAR (#3) as a citation for John's sisters. (DAR currently cites 4 children 1) John + Alida Livingston, 2) James + Mary Stevenson, 3) Jane + David Drennan, and 4) Rebecca + James Turner. The original applications for Jane and Rebecca appear to have been completed long ago, before sourcing evidence for lineages was routinely required. John is DAR partriot A003132).

Also in this section, is stated that Margaret Armstrong 1737–1817 who married Rev Duffield is a sister of John Armstrong Sr. In fact, she is his sister-in-law, being the sister of John's wife, Rebecca Lyon (Armstrong) Armstrong. Margaret is a daughter of Archibald Armstrong, named in Archibald's Will along with general John Armstrong Sr. Per Archibald's Will, Margaret Archibald's daughter is "wife of Rev. George Duffield". Unless we learn otherwise, we will strike the mention of Margaret as a sister.

Archibald's Will -- A Calendar of Delaware Wills, New Castle County, 1682-1800. Wilmington, DE: 1911; Will Book K, page 228-9

Another source explaining Margaret and Rebecca as daughters of Archibald - Appendix C in John Armstrong: Proprietor's Man by Robert Grant Crist, 1981.
