Jewish American Catholic?
[edit]Wikipedia describes him as "American Jewish" but the Washington Post article below says he "converted to Catholicism as a young man." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/21/AR2006082100039.html
- looks like it's been updated accordingly.

- so was he of Jewish ethnicity? I don't see a mention of catholicism in the current article

Coincidence
[edit]One of the pioneers of moving pictures was a Jewish Brit whose most famous newsreel clip showed general Lord Roberts raising a flag at Pretoria in 1900. That moviemaker's name was Joseph Rosenthal.109.155.228.178 (talk) 09:40, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Sands of Iwo Jima Flagraising
[edit]To whoever just added the paragraph stating that this film spliced Genaust's actual color 16mm footage of the flagraising into the film--are you sure? I haven't seen the film in a while, but I recall that the three survivors and the three extras rasing the flag actually paused in the positions in the photo before fully raising it. That definitely didn't happen in Genaust's footage. Plus Sands was a black and white film. Also, I've seen pictures taken on the set showing that Ira Hayes was having trouble keeping up with the other guys as they riased the flag. I'm not going to revert your edit just yet, but I think you're dead wrong on this. Sir Rhosis 20:46, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I think the anon is correct. If memory serves, they really did show the actual footage Genaust shot. Raul654 20:49, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Then I could be wrong, though I would've sworn I wasn't. I'll watch the film agains sometime to make sure. I just seem to remember this goofy posing they did as they raised the flag so that everybody could tell they were recreating the photograph. Geanust's film shows a quick raising of the flag, no stopping, no posing, etc.
Here's a link to a photo taken at Camp Pendleton where they filmed the flagraising. Why pose the guys if they're using the actual footage.

Here's another photo showing the three survivors and the three extras trying to get it right for the film:

- The recreation of the flagraising occurs at 1:47:39 in this film, and including reactions shots from men watching, it takes them almost twenty seconds to raise the flag. They raise it to a position that mimics the famous photogaph, then they pause as Forrest Tucker's character, and others, look on in awe. The film then cuts back to the flagriasers who then continue until they are upright and secure the flagpole. It is NOT Genaust's footage. It is a recreation, using the three surviivors and three extras as I stated above. Sir Rhosis 19:42, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
