Birthplace? Elgin or Temple?

[edit]

It seems, as a person born in modern times, it would not be that hard to determine where he was born, but there are sources online that state Elgin, TX and sources that state Temple, TX. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.147.113.66 (talk) 21:05, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment

[edit]

"The Steelers chose with the first overall choice in the 1969 NFL draft." Is this true? NFL.com says that O.J. Simpson was selected 1st overall in that draft.

In reality, Joe Greene was selected in the first round by the Steelers, the Buffalo Bills did worse than the Steelers in 1968, so therefore, OJ was selected first, not Joe.

After XLIII Joe Green should now have SIX super bowl rings for his continuing work with the Steelers...

Somebody please review my Bettis commercial comment. Mapsax 19:27, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought Joe Greene gave the kid his cleats... not his jersey. Or... am I thinking of another commercial.

It was a jersey. Watch Youtube.

Needs Citations

[edit]

Way too many opinions have been thrown into this entry which need citations, otherwise, throw them out. Also, I'm sensing some bias... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stev0supreemo (talkcontribs) 06:36, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Needs to mention that UNT renamed itself for him

[edit]

The UNT Eagles are now officially the Mean Green, and it was named after Joe Greene. No mention? C'mon now. --Bobak (talk) 22:11, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

@Bobak: I'm responding to this prehistoric comment to inform you that this is probably untrue. The article now reflects what I could find with my best efforts. It seems the Mean Green and Mean Joe most likely attained their nickname simultaneously. I'm not sure where the ESPN encyclopedia got their info, but I couldn't find any other reliable sources supporting its claim. Lizard (talk) 00:48, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lizard the Wizard: Yup, in the ensuing 8 years I've learned it's the nickname of the unit he played for at UNT and, when he went pro, writers just gave him that as his pro nickname. --Bobak (talk) 03:55, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split off commercial section

[edit]

The section is about the Coke commercial is pretty extensive, and could probably be split off to its own article, leaving just a few lines here, WP:SUMMARY-style. Anyone have an opinion on this? --Elonka 21:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it's probably one of the most famous commercials in American television. I think it deserves its own article. --Zzyxzaa26 (talk) 20:55, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, just my humble opinion here but I bulleted each of the ads/show references so it reads easier under "In popular culture", also I am here today because I just saw a Newhart rerun from 1983 where "Dick Louden" parodies the ad in the Boston Garden. Added it. Hholt01 (talk) 05:29, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Images would be nice

[edit]

I've expanded the article a good bit, and there's still much more that could be added. If anyone can find some images to help split up the text a bit that'd be swell. Lizard (talk) 04:55, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I added the following photos to Commons: File:Joe Greene Locker Heinz Field Walk of Fame.jpg, File:Joe Greene Helmet LockerPlaque.jpg, File:Joe Greene Jersey BobbleHead.jpg, File:Joe Greene Trophy and Steel Cutrain Signatures.jpg
Hope these are helpful. I'm sorry for the glare - it's the best I could do. Perhaps the glare can be edited out by someone who is good at photo editing. I'll have to get a photo of Greene's section of the retired jerseys on my next trip to the stadium.
Cheers! - tucoxn\talk 23:25, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tucoxn. I'll definitely try to get some of these into the article. Lizard (talk) 18:55, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Overall:
Pass/Fail:

  • I'd suggest moving the attitude and playing style section to the end of the article, after the pro career. It jumps into things that aren't covered yet, so seems out of place. Especially as it comes after a quote from Greene saying he wants to be remembered as not being mean, then shows some pretty mean things.
Done Good point. I had it there for flow but chronology is probably more important.
  • "Noll and the Rooney family agreed..." note that the Rooney's own the team.
 Done
  • "He...appeared on the cover of Time magazine in December 1975, a rare tribute." Clarify what exactly was the rare tribute here.
Done I went and removed the "rare tribute" part as the author doesn't make it clear exactly what was rare about it. I could assume he means appearing on the cover of Time but I don't know for certain.
  • "The defense allowed only two touchdowns over nine games. The Steelers were defeated by the Raiders in that year's AFC championship game." Has no citation.
 Done
  • "His wish went unfulfilled, however, as the Steelers failed to make the playoffs in each of his final two seasons." Also no citation.
 Done
  • "As of 2016, he has since returned to his home state and resides in Flower Mound, Texas." Returned from where?
Done I was assuming he was living elsewhere but I'm not sure. I removed that part.
  • "His wife of 47 years, Agnes, with whom he had three children, died in 2015." This is the first mention of her, and his children. Should it maybe go earlier in the article, perhaps in the early life section? Just feels odd to have it briefly mentioned here.
Done Admittedly, writing about personal info is usually not my forte. I added some additional info into the early life section.
  • "He finished his career having played in 181 out of a possible 190 games..." and "His durability allowed him to play in 182 of a possible 190 games..." don't add up. What is the real number?
 Done It was 181.
  • Reference 4 is dead.
 Done Replaced.

Other than those few things, it's a really good article and quite well-written. Kaiser matias (talk) 01:57, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I'll try to get to this and make these fixes sometime on Monday. Lizard (talk) 02:07, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, I look forward to seeing the finished version. Kaiser matias (talk) 02:18, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That should be everything. I didn't have access to Newspapers.com when I first worked on the article. It's a great luxury to have. Lizard (talk) 03:11, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, looks even better now. Kaiser matias (talk) 06:29, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

If his birth name was Charles Edward Greene, why was he called Joe? – PeeJay 18:36, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This post is still here. Figured I'd respond. I think we all know now.
@PeeJay: This is what his page says regarding -- Joe:
As for the “Joe” part of his nickname (since his given name was Charles, not Joseph), that came from one of his aunts.
During a 2014 interview with NFL Films, Greene said that his aunt nicknamed him Joe due to his resemblance to boxing legend Joe Louis, who at the time of Greene's birth was in the middle of his 12-year reign as heavyweight champion.
"She thought I was hefty and bulky enough to be called Joe Louis," Greene said. "She started calling me Joe, and it kind of stuck." Bringingthewood (talk) 06:15, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

September 24, 1946 is stated in the article (lead and early life sections). Also the same is in the infobox.
