Born date
[edit]On German wiki, the date of bitrh is 1943. Why? Which date is true? Sorry for my english.
First pop singer to perform in the Soviet Union? What about Dean Reed? Dean Reed moved to East Germany in 1973, and started performing all over the East Bloc...I bet he beat Joe to the punch.
Try 16 October 1940 for Joe's real birth date. Was a classmate of the guy.

Age
[edit]The DOB is obviously wrong. He died aged 68, his birthdate suggests he died at 64. Oh me oh my... 86.42.229.49 (talk) 23:15, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yep! You're right. I'll see if I can get something definitive on that. Thanks for spotting it - Alison ❤ 23:31, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, it looks like the date is correct and he died aged 64 [1][2] It looks like this reference is incorrect - Alison ❤ 23:34, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
i think like many people in the entertainment industry he may have shaved a few years off his age
- I'm not so sure guys that this is resolved. When this page was originally created no DOB was added. In January 2006, somebody "copied" the DOB (with no cite) from the DE project.[3] This remained until October of 2006 when an anon changed it to 1943.[4] Again, no definitive source was provided. Frankly, I am a little concerned that some of the news media reports are "circular references" (taking the DOB from this Wikipedia article). Is there any corroborating source for either date? 1940? Or 1943? Personally (no offence to the Belfast Telegraph), but I'd believe the RTÉ news and the Irish Times on this. Who both reported his age as 68. (Which would support the former). Any ideas about whether (or how) to verify either? Guliolopez (talk) 00:18, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- You're absolutely right, Guliolopez, and I endorse your editing requiring cites just now. It needs to be looked into further and given that his official website makes a point of not mentioning it, it's going to be difficult. BTW - I first found out about his passing on ga.wikipedia! - Alison ❤ 02:29, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks Alison. I have sent an email to Mr. Steven Carroll (author of Irish Times report titled "Singer Joe Dolan (68) dies following short illness"[5]), to see if he might share the source he used for Mr. Dolan's DOB. I am unfortunately not confident that it will be received, and less sure about how else to follow-up if I get no response. I share your concern (again with every possible respect due to Mr. Dolan, his family, and his commercial representation) that gaining confirmation through "direct sources" might be difficult (certainly at this time), and also potentially troublesome, given possibility that DOB is possibly not deliberately mentioned. (Given propensity of music and related industries to favour "youth"). Anyway, there is no immediate panic. Certainly would DEFINITELY avoid disturbing the family or any other direct sources, but if there are any notions on original sources, ideas are most welcome. Guliolopez (talk) 02:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- (FYI - I learned of Mr. Dolan's passing on the RTÉ news report, and immediately checked the GA project to see if anyone was updating the relevant article. At which point I noted that the content was at odds with what I'd just heard in the news report. Hence my note here and on the GA project :\ ) Guliolopez (talk) 02:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- The Irish Times, although not infallible, is a trustworthy source often cited in Wikipedia articles. In today's edition (December 27, 2007) Joe Dolan's year of birth is given as 1939. Today's Irish Independent states Dolan's age as 68. The obituaries in this weekend's editions should provide a definitive answer. The Times often quotes the exact date of birth in its Obituary column. Its sources partly come from extensive clippings files which draw on published articles, interviews, etc. from a wide range of printed media. Jim Bruce (talk) 13:03, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Generosity
[edit]In this article it is alleged that Joe secretly gave thousands of pounds/euros to the poor during his career. seven+one 01:23, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting. I'd heard that rumour in a Hot Press interview many years ago. It's largely speculation but interesting that the Beeb picked up on it - Alison ❤ 02:10, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Sexuality
[edit]Do you think there should be something mentioned here about his vague sexuality. [6][7] --MaxPride (talk) 16:40, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
- Definitely it should be mentioned. He was obviously gay.Its propbably one of the main reasons he chose to stay in ireland. If he made it really big anywhere else he would have been outed. If any of his fans where to find out they wouldnt believe. He must have been completely ashamed of what he was throughout his life.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.232.2.65 (talk • contribs)
- The "speculation" aspect is already mentioned. Any definitive assertions about Dolan's sexuality should be FULLY sourced and cited. Comments by anon that he was "obviously gay", and "that's why he stayed in Ireland", and "he was completely ashamed of it" are TOTALLY speculative, and are not a basis for additions to the article. [edit]Popular trivia should mention the "What stars do travellers follow", Joe Dolan. It is too funny!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.151.26.75 (talk) 23:06, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Don't know if that's genuine - but it's really made me laugh!--Tuzapicabit (talk) 22:20, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
NPOV
[edit]Just tagged the article as not sticking to NPOV, unencyclopedic tone, weasel words etc. It needs a thorough edit to trim down the excess and include more references.Autarch (talk) 13:17, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
This article needs urgent revision
[edit]As an Encyclopædia entry this article on Joe Dolan is not up to standard. Actually its one of the worst I've read for all the reasons given at the beginning. It should stick to facts and give references? It would benefit from someone who didn't know the guy. The specualtion about his sexuality appears to be - just that and doesn't warrant a seperate heading. I liked some of his songs and even met the guy at my granddad's some forty five years ago but to describe him as a worldwide star is bloody daft. dorkinglad (talk)
Bias
[edit]This is typical of many Irish-based articles: full of overflowing bias, but this has got to be the worst case I've ever seen. The poor prose just clogs the article so badly that I can't bear to work on it, as I was intending to do. Not one single statement in the career section is backed up with a reference. Statements in question are too numerous to mention (although apparently he was one of the biggest stars in the world during the 1980s!). Having done some research already I can say that since 1977 he has spent a total of two weeks in the UK charts (at Nos. 96 and 100), has not charted anywhere else outside of Ireland and has NEVER appeared on the US top 100 singles or top 200 albums at any time. The only part of the article which is referenced is his death (which would leave the article pretty bare if all else were deleted). The Personal life section is also very dubious. I'll see if I can tackle it later once I've calmed down!--Tuzapicabit (talk) 05:41, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've got a copy of the official biography at the moment so I'm trying to clean up the style of prose, make the article more encyclopaedic and get more facts with references rather than just having a "Joe Dolan was great" kind of article. I'm taking my time at it so it'll be a couple of days anyway but any help from any other corners will be greatly appreciated. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- A bit better and good to see references, but the America section is still a bit on the biased side. The Assaulted and Aer Lingus ban sections seem a bit unnecessary and read as fairly trivial occurrences. Still, it's in the right direction. (ps. Keith Duffy of Westlife?). --Tuzapicabit (talk) 09:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
- Ok I'll potter around with it a bit more. I've corrected the Westlife gaffe. A bit of word blindness on my part. What do you think is still biased about America? I thought that section was fairly straightforward now.SonofSetanta (talk) 16:02, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- It seems a bit one-sided, do we really have any proper proof about all this Las Vegas stuff other than an (obviously biaised) biography? Plus just picking out a random sentence here:
"whilst definitive versions of songs such as “Danny Boy” maintained a touch of Irish on disc and in concert. In any given month Joe could be touring the Middle East one week, Australia the next, then South Africa and then back to Europe and Ireland. Further international successes and tours followed, with hits such as “More and More” and “It’s You, It’s You, It’s You”."
- Who says it's definitive? "a touch of Irish" (encyclopedic much?), Joe could be touring? - Either he did or he didn't - give a sourced example, international hits? Where exactly? Elsewhere I notice the decade 80s mentioned - I don't think Joe was alive then. It's awful, sorry.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 19:10, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

- Yes I did read the "artilce". The 80s occurred more than two thousand years ago.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 08:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

I agree that the biography is very biased and have done my best to avoid using the glossy terms contained within it. As historians though we must note facts and the biography is a reasonable source for them and that's accepted across this wiki. The biography states he did two tours of Las Vegas in the Continental Lounge and even gives the remuneration for the first one - we can take that as fact. We can also take it as fact that he turned down subsequent tours - because he did. We could go further and report on the highs and lows of the Las Vegas tours, particularly the first one, but I don't see the point. Yes he had nights where there was hardly anyone in but the biography reports that after the first few shows most of the remainder were sold out. That seems reasonable to me. A lot of this information is available from obits too although in less detail. From it I deduce that Joe Dolan never had a successful recording career in the USA but did have success with live shows in Las Vegas and in targetted areas (mostly Irish American) elsewhere in the states.
There is ample evidence to support his successful recording career over four decades (some sources say five). He certainly had number one hits in Ireland across those years, he also had number one hits in other countries. I don't have the book anymore but if anyone has good sources for these please feel free to include them.
When I started editing the article looked like an homage to Joe Dolan. My belief is that it now looks like an encyclopaedic article. Is it finished? I don't think so. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Can anyone help with a better image for this article? I've contacted Ben Dolan through the website and had no reply so it looks like it's up to us guys. SonofSetanta (talk) 14:38, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
