[edit]Joaquín Torres García (28 July 1874 – 8 August 1949) also known as Joaquim Torras, Quim Torras was a Uruguayan/Catalan artist, painter, sculptor, muralist, novelist, writer, teacher and theorist who spent most of his adult life in Spain and France. Pioneer of the renaissance of Modern Classicism, leader of the Mediterranean cultural tradition noucentisme, inventor of Universal Constructivism, "Torres-Garcia is one of the great figures of the art of this century", an avant gardist whose influence encompasses European, American and South American modern art. As a theoretician he published "more than one hundred and fifty books, essays and articles written in Catalan, Spanish, French, English. Torres-Garcia was the son of Catalan who immigrated to Uruguay in search of fortune. The Torras Fradera family, rope makers (original family name) lived in Mataro, Spain. Torres-Garcia was the first child born to Joaquim Torras Fradera and Maria Garcia in Montevideo July 28th 1874, amid revolutions, banks fraud and coup the etats, which finally tried Fradera´s pacience returning to his homeland Barcelona to persue a succesful career as a constructor. Young Quim, as he was nicknamed did not want to follow in his father´s footsteps, he yet had to prove to his father that he could earn a living as an artist, therefore he started teaching, offering his services to young ladies from affluent families, where he met his future wife. Illustrating magazines and books also provided income. He enrolled at the Academia de Bellas Artes in Barcelona. His classmates and friends included Ricard Canals, Manolo Hugue, Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell, Pablo Picasso, and Julio Gonzalez. He drew the nude in drawing groups and sketched all over the city. The extensive study from nature provided the skill which was the base for his originality and versatality. His education was not to limited to art, in his quest for culture due to his humble origins he had everything to learn literature, music, philosophy, etc.
