Nickname

[edit]

Where does this "Muhammad Ali of tennis" comes from ?! Why ?

I'll admit that there is a resemblance, but isn't this comparison a bit premature and possibly ethincally delicate... KRay 11:12, 24 January 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kray (talkcontribs)

No it's not ethnically delicate. Players really do call him that, he does look like Muhammad Ali very much, and they've been showing it on the program so many times and talking about it. Just don't put the nickname in the infobox lol. ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 11:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wilfried

[edit]

Does anybody know, why his parents picked "Wilfried" as his second name? As far as I know it is an oldfashioned German name. 85.178.12.98 (talk) 12:52, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a second name, it is a composed name, there is a "-". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.8.31.204 (talk) 17:24, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect reference to seeding?

[edit]

In the 2008 sections it says "6th seeded Tsonga". This seems to be incorrect to me. He has never been ranked that high.

More on injuries?

[edit]

I know nothing about this guy other than the great tennis he's played in Australia this year. The ESPN2 commentators have referred to the injuries that have troubled him until recently, but I see nothing about that in the article. Does anyone have the skinny on this? I think it would be worth adding. Jbening (talk) 01:11, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely it would. I suck at finding new articles to site, but I will help if I can. He's 22 now, but it is just starting to get into good rhythm to rise in the rankings. It may be hard to find a good article about his injuries. ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 01:20, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can see about his injuries on the french article of Wikipédia and here "victime d'une hernie discale (novembre 2004 à mars 2005). Cette même année sera un calvaire avec des blessures au dos, à l'épaule et aux abdominaux (d'octobre 2006 à février 2007). Devant tous ces déboires, les médecins ne lui garantissent pas de pouvoir encore jouer au tennis à un niveau professionnel mais Tsonga n'attend pas d'être totalement guéri pour s'aligner sur les tournois. Pour tenter d'exister sur le circuit, il est forcé d'écumer le circuit parallèle depuis 2001 (Challengers et Futures)." bobodu81

Serve like Roddick

[edit]

Somebody put this comment in the article (sic!), I am moving it here: (As he is only 3 years younger than Roddick... is this likely?) It is regarding the following statement: As a child, he and fellow tennis player Gaël Monfils would spend hours trying to develop a serve just like Andy Roddick's.

Tsonga is not cousin to Nzogbia, because Nzogbia is french of congolese parentage(DR CONGO)and Tsonga has mixed heritage having a french mother and a congolese father(republique of Congo). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.147.13.93 (talk) 16:48, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Career Earnings - delete

[edit]

I took out the whole "Career Earnings" section from the bottom of the article - it had a redundant one row-one column box with Tsonga's career earnings - and also an interesting trivia note I myself had written in January. It's redundant, and violates WP:Notability I think, so I have removed that section now. Trivia is also not condoned on wikipedia. See the old page here, if you think it should not have been removed.

Carol Thatcher comments

[edit]

In my opinion this section has no place on this page; maybe on the Carol Thatcher page, but not here. Would like to hear the reasons of those who disagree. Thanks, almost-instinct 16:59, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. While it can be easily shown that these comments have had an impact on Thatcher, I doubt the reverse is true. People just love their trivia. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 20:51, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nicknames

[edit]

Who on earth calls him "Poseidon of the Court"? And if anyone, why are they calling him this? What does it even mean? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael5Essien (talkcontribs) 01:00, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

The assertion that JWT's real name is Tsonga-Petsonga is wrong and now considered as a recurent vandalism on WP:fr since absolutely no reliable source or data support this name. The ATP tour website, Davis Cup website and all the press articles in french and english are naming him Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The only source given for this name is a pseudo-fan website totally not reliable.--LPLT (talk) 18:09, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, the IP 213.149.189.241 is responsible on various WP to add systematically this error and referencing it with the pseudo-fan website whereas the only official website is www.jowiltsonga.fr.--LPLT (talk) 15:16, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Relation to Charles N'Zogbia

[edit]

I'm 100% certain that this isn't true. I have looked back into where it came into existance and it seems to have come about via some lazy journalism and vandalism. The claim is initially inserted in this article in this [1]edit (note the vandalism insertion of "mongrel" too) on 27/1/08. It is then inserted on Charles N'Zogbia's article [2]here, although not supported by the source used, also on 27/1/08. The source that we now have [3]is written on 28/1/08, when both pages have the claim on it, unsourced. This has then been used as the source to back up the claim. I have therefore removed the claim as not having an independent valid source, prior to 27/1/08. If someone can provide proof from prior to that date, when the claim was made here, then I think that should be acceptable, or something confirming it directly by either of the people involved. Wrong

[edit]

He made a run at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, upsetting Federer on Centre Court to reach the semifinals for the first time in his Wimbledon career, handing Federer his first loss after leading two sets to love and finishing the match 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6.

This is wrong info, Federer lost 2-3 against Hewitt in Davis Cup 2003 after being 2-0 up, so it's not his first loss of that kind. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.143.112.107 (talk) 15:32, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The table showing his tourney results is showing results for 2012 and 2013 . . . it is only 2011 now. The formatting is far too difficult for me to fix, but it's wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.36.128.67 (talk) 13:08, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Too much detail?

[edit]

Removed a lot of material but still his career is far too detailed, especially 2011 and 2012 (and we're only halfway through), listing when he broke back, or lost a break, etc. in minor tournaments. Also reads like a fansite or blog entry with exclamation and question marks. e.g "This was not to be as Tommy polished off the Frenchman", "Tsonga looked extremely fatigued and the loss was perhaps a blessing in disguise. The days off will give Tsonga the appropriate time to rest up", "The semi-finals was bound to [be] an epic encounter", "An extremely disappointing result!", "This form looked worrying!", "we saw glimpses of what may come", "DelPo's apparent recurring knee injury perhaps started to shine through".

How did it get like this? Needs to be further edited down in my opinion. Feudonym (talk) 17:58, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removed more POV material added in great chunks by 86.182.12.235: "this proved to simply be a classic case of "slow start syndrome"", "the 200-punder [sic] raced to a 7–5, 6–4, 6–4 victory", "Agonising for Tsonga fans everywhere. However, the French number one did vow to return even stronger for the grass-court season!", "The grass-court season began in the same way it always does for Jo". Feudonym (talk) 23:12, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely agree, it seems like every single match he has played is in this article. Needs to be reduced to major matches (i.e. titles, finals, wins against top 4?). Also the playing style section seems quite opinionated. Tombo7791 (talk) 20:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Records

[edit]

Tsonga is the only man to have beaten every member of the Big Four at a Major. Is this notable enough to create a Records section and add it in there, similar to Federer, Djokovic, Nadal etc. pages? I think so myself, but would like to hear other opinions. Mwhittaker92 (talk) 12:41, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Updating class rating

[edit]

It has been well over a year since there have been comments/fixes noted. If there were too many details, I feel that Tsonga's increasingly impressive career now warrants detailed treatment. I am promoting this article from Start to B, based on my review. Kindly, Bill McKenna (talk) 04:29, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About the pronunciation

[edit]

Is the pronunciation correct? Here is the pronunciation by Tsonga himself: http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/enwiki/T786/overview. @Mr KEBAB: LoveVanPersie (talk) 17:39, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@LoveVanPersie: Fixed. Mr KEBAB (talk) 18:00, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: Why isn't "on" [ɔ̃]? And "Jo" was transcripted as [(d)ʒo] one time, is [d] optional? LoveVanPersie (talk) 18:08, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: I changed the affricate to the fricative because that's how Tsonga pronounces it himself (perhaps the affricate pronunciation is also possible), and I have no idea whether Tsonga is pronounced with [ɔ̃] or [ɔŋ]. I must admit that I can't hear the difference very well. Mr KEBAB (talk) 18:21, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: Is it should be [ɔ̃] according to French orthography? LoveVanPersie (talk) 18:25, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: Tsonga is not a native French word. Mr KEBAB (talk) 18:36, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: It seems that Ts is pronounced [s] in the third pronunciation? http://forvo.com/word/jo-wilfried_tsonga/amp And a French interviewer pronounced it like this. LoveVanPersie (talk) 18:48, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: The first two pronouncers use an affricate, the third one uses a stop-fricative sequence. That's the difference. Mr KEBAB (talk) 18:57, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: I get it. Thanks so much! LoveVanPersie (talk) 19:02, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: One more question, it's about "on" and [ɔ̃] again... You said Paulo Dybala, also not a native Spanish word, is pronounced according to Spanish orthography? LoveVanPersie (talk) 21:02, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: I'm not sure what you're getting at. Mr KEBAB (talk) 21:10, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr KEBAB: I mean why on in Tsonga can't be transcripted as [ɔ̃] according to French orthography, as Dybala is transcripted according to Spanish orthography. LoveVanPersie (talk) 21:23, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: I don't know how Tsonga is pronounced. I've said that already. Mr KEBAB (talk) 21:25, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LoveVanPersie: Ok, I've relistened to the audio files you provided and I'm 90% sure that [ɔŋ] is the correct pronunciation. Mr KEBAB (talk) 21:39, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
