Confusion in relation to this specific "J. Pender"

This article refers to the James Robert Pender, the son of Michael and Mary Anne Pender, born in North Melbourne on 3 July 1877, and who was killed in action, in France, on 2 July 1916, who played 15 games for Carlton First XVIII in 1898.

  • (1) Among other things, the australianfootball.com article ([1]) states that,
    • in addition to his 15 games with Carlton in the VFL,
    • he also played 23 games for East Perth over the period 1908-1911.
  • (2) Among other things, the Blueseum article ([2]) states that,
    • in addition to his 15 games with Carlton in the VFL,
    • he played for Footscray in the VFA (prior to playing with Carlton),
    • he played for three seasons with East Perth after leaving Carlton,
    • he played for North Melbourne in the VFA after leaving East Perth.
    • and, as well, the Blueseum article displays a photograph of the "J. Pender" who was part of the Boulder City Football team that won the Goldfields Football League premiership in 1907 (team photo at: [3]).

However, the following pertinent facts exist in various locations:

  • (A) The "J. Pender" who played with East Perth was not James Robert Pender.
    • the "J. Pender" who was part of the Boulder City Football team that won the Goldfields Football League premiership in 1907 was cleared from Boulder City to East Perth in 1908 ([4]).
    • the East Perth records ([5]) show that the "J. Pender" was one "Joseph Pender".
    • 1918 newspaper report identifies ex-East Perth Player "Joe Pender" as having "recently returned from France" ([6]).
    • returned soldier was "Sergeant Joseph Pender (3231) born in Millicent South Australia, aged 31 years (service record: [7]).
  • (B) The VFA Project lists an otherwise unidentified "L. J. Pender" who played 11 games for the VFA team North Melbourne in 1908 ([8]).
    • The VFA Project lists "L. J. Pender" as playing for North Melbourne against Port Melbourne on Saturday 11 July 1908 ([9]), while the VFL statistics lists "Jack Pender" as playing for Geelong against Melbourne on Saturday 11 July 1908 ([10]) -- and, so, despite the otherwise unexplained "L.J.", the "L. J. Pender" who played for North Melbourne in 1908 can not be the (John Thomas Pender (1885-1937)) who played for Geelong.
    • a press report simply speaks of an individual identified only as "Pender" as a "new player" for North Melbourne ([11]).
