Jhoon Rhee commercial
[edit]I added information about the Jhoon Rhee commercial that aired in the Washington DC area in the late 70s/early 80s, including a link to the commercial. Illdini 16:38, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
I will be adding more information and references as I find them, but J. G. Rhee is well established as the pioneering Tae Kwon-Do master in the USA. Thanks for adding the link, Illdini. Janggeom 11:50, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Kinney Karate Association
[edit]One of the biggest Karate organizations in Oklahoma was heavily influenced by Jhoon Rhee. The Kinney Karate Association was created by Bob Kinney, George Baldwin and others. Bob and George were both initially trained by Jhoon Rhee as two of his first students in the Oklahoma area.

reference for Jhoon Rhee's study of Chung Do Kwan
[edit]I believe it is worthwhile to include this reference in the infobox. Please state if you think the reference should remain or be removed and why. User5802 13:50, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- I moved the Chung Do Kwan reference from the infobox to the main text because:
(1) If something is important enough to have a reference, then it should at least appear in the main text (not just in an infobox);
(2) It keeps the infobox visually uncluttered (not the case yet, but it would become so with more references); and
(3) It preserves reference order in a clear manner (otherwise someone reading the main text—the core of the article—would come across reference 2 and be obliged to look around to find reference 1).
I am not aware of any relevant Wikipedia guideline on referencing in infoboxes, but if there is such a guideline then I would appreciate a link for my education. Thank you. Janggeom 16:48, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I did not see that it had been added to the bottom of the article. I thought the reference had simply been deleted entirely. I removed the reference once again. My mistake. User5802 18:29, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for presenting your point of view, User5802; clearly just a simple misunderstanding. Janggeom 13:22, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Dan
[edit]Goo Rhee is ranked 10th dan, but taekwondo only has 9 and, seldom, 10 ranks. From Dan_(rank)#Ranks_in_Korean:
Usually the dan ranks do not go past ninth dan, although on some occasions in some organizations a tenth dan (십단) has been issued. According to Kukkiwon, they have only ever issued six official 10th Dan to deceased people, and two living persons, (Un Yong Kim and Sang Kee Paik) who were considered to have made a great contribution to Tae kwon do.[citation needed]
Should his name be added there? --Jargon ๏̯͡๏) 10:41, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- There are many ranking systems, of which the Kukkiwon/WTF system is only one (albeit one of the major ones). I do not believe that J. G. Rhee's 10th Dan is from Kukkiwon, so his name should not be included as a WTF 10th Dan holder. Janggeom (talk) 12:57, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- You're right- it should be ITF. Still, it's weird.. I assumed it was Kukkiwon because I have never heard of a 10th dan in ITF. :/ --Jargon ๏̯͡๏) 15:38, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- ITF and WTF are not the only ranking systems, so not receiving a rank from one of these two systems does not necessarily imply that it came from the other system. Just a brief comment. Janggeom (talk) 15:44, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation- I'm still a newbie in Taekwondo :D --Jargon ๏̯͡๏) 17:26, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
The WTF is not a system, and the WTF does not issue Dan Rank. The WTF does however only recognize Dan rank from the Kukkiwon, which is a separate and distinctly different organization.
The WTF governs international competitions as the international federation for Taekwondo under the IOC. It also approves one "member national association" for Taekwondo in each of 200 nations world wide.
The Kukkiwon is a center for research, training and certification of Taekwondo practitioners.
