Megan Kanka redirect?

[edit]

It feels odd to me that the Megan Kanka article simply redirects to the page of the person who raped and murdered her.

A second article about her specifically could be created. —Preceding unsigned comment added by James Lednik (talkcontribs) 05:12, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it seems odd. There was a Megan Kanka article in the past, but an editor (not myself, although I did agree with his action after the fact) decided to be WP:BOLD and resolve an extended edit war by redirecting Megan's article here. Evidence of the edit war can still be viewed at the Megan Kanka history page here. The war dealt mainly with one editor who insisted on including Megan in now-defunct categories such as "Child abuse victims" and "Rape victims". A look at the article's talk page here will give you an idea of what kind of infuriating edits the article drew in other areas. I can't find the reference or wiki-rule, but as I recall there was a broad administrative move at the time of the redirect to cut back on articles such as Megan Kanka and Elizabeth Smart, where the person's fame was mainly as a crime victim. Hope this helps. CliffC 12:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The funny thing is it wasn't done without discussion, it was done against discussion: Talk:Megan_Kanka#Merging_with_Jesse_Timmendequas reveals a strong consensus not to merge it. I think having a foundation and very widely cited and controversial law named after her confers notability. Furthermore, if she is not notable herself then how does the small-time criminal who murdered her deserve an article? I'd say the content from the historical article on Megan should either be restored or redirected to Megan's Law. Having it redirect here seems in rather poor taste, and an edit war (about categories no less!) is a poor excuse to not have an article on that subject. --TexasDex 06:36, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm reworking the Megan's Law page. I'd like to be able to link to a page specifically about Megan Kanka, rather than have 2 links for the monster who killed her. I'm going to put some of the information of the crime in the Megan's Law page. Is there enough information on her life to have another page? At the very least can we stop directing it to Jesse Timmendequas? Thanks --65.8.183.156 (talk) 00:54, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again, here are the links to Megan's talk page and Megan's history page so you can see what was being discussed and how the merge you object to came about. As far as info about Megan, there was virtually nothing in her article that's not here in her murderer's; she was only seven years old so there's not much to say beyond her murder and Megan's Law. Good luck, but don't be surprised to see some administrative objection.
IMO, I don't see any point in recounting the murder yet again on the Megan's Law page. -CliffC (talk) 02:18, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I've removed most of the personal information of both Megan and her killer from the Megan's Law page. CliffC made a good point, she was only 7. It would be great to have a topical bio page instead of her only identifier being the crime, but a link to her parent's foundation will have to do. Thanks--Legomancer (talk) 03:19, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about changing the redirect for Megan to point to Megan's Law instead? That would eliminate the sour stomachs people get when they enter Megan's name and end up at the Timmendequas article. --CliffC (talk) 04:04, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can live with that. Do you think I should re-add some personal information back to the Megan's Law page? How do I change a redirect? --Legomancer (talk) 06:24, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Thanks,[reply]

Okay, I changed it. I went to the "(Redirected from Megan Kanka)" at the top of the page, clicked on the name and changed the redirect target to Megan's Law. That page does sound like the best spot for a bit of personal information. Again, this is just my opinion, but we should keep the detailed account of the murder here at Timmendequas, anyone who wants the details will find them easily enough. Regards, CliffC (talk) 15:20, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree with you changing the redirect, it seems it much better taste to have it point to Megan's Law rather than her murderer. However with articles about people only notable for one event (see WP:BLP1E) there seems to be an accepted practice to "Cover the event, not the person." in this case perhaps merge it all into an article titled Murder of Megan Kanka. I'm thinking that both Megan Kanka, Jesse Timm.. could redirect to it, and Megan's Law could be altered to refer to it (i.e. "Main article: Murder of Megan Kanka") If there are no objections I'll go ahead and do that myself eventually. --TexasDex (talk) 17:48, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That does have the positive effect of not having an article here named for her killer. I see by the Wikipedia index page at http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Special:Allpages&from=Muratec_Reunion_Pro-Am that there are several dozen Murder of... articles, so I guess that's settled into an acceptable approach. Talk:Murder of Rhys Jones has some related discussion. I do hope that the Megan Kanka redirect will continue to point to Megan's Law rather than straight to the "Murder of" article and all its detail. --CliffC (talk) 23:53, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
