Part of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. Some or all of the changes weren't supported by neutral, independent, reliable sources. Consider re-submitting with content based on media, books and scholarly works. |
First, I am declaring paid conflict of interest as it relates to Jenoptik’s Wikipedia page. I would like to suggest the following changes to update the page, as much has taken place in the last years that is not reflected on the page, making the information incomplete and not entirely true. To make it easiest, I will provide complete sentences and paragraphs that are neutral and have no advertising motive. Therefore, this change suggestion is quite lengthy since I explain each change thoroughly. With these changes and declaration of conflicting interest, I would also like to request for the lifting of the advertising templates from the page. There was only one change made in the past made without declaring conflict of interest unknowingly. The article is neutral, does not contain advertising language, and I am not making these changes directly. Thanks for your time and considerations!
1) The introductory section needs to reflect the company's business restructuring in 2022. They restructured to become a purely phototonic organization and refocused its target industries. This change can also be reflected in the first paragraph under “Company Profile.” It could say the following:
→"Jenoptik AG is a German, integrated photonics group that divides its business activities into two photonics-based divisions: “Advanced Photonic Solutions” and “Smart Mobility Solutions.” Non-photonic activities are operated within the group’s “Non-Photonic Portfolio” companies.
The group’s worldwide customers mainly consist of companies in the semiconductor equipment, electronics, life science and medical technology, and traffic and security industries."[1]
- Inserted comment The divisional breakdown/structural changes info couldn't be properly sourced, so it was removed. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
2) The second sentence in the first paragraph under “Company Profile” can be deleted because Jenoptik is divesting from this brand. This is not to “erase history,” so to say, but I will request changes under “Group structure and business activities” to record this event in the history of the company. Sentence to be deleted:
→“The new brand Vincorion is dedicated to the mechatronic business of Jenoptik.”[2]
- Inserted comment Vincorian has been removed. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
3) The first two paragraphs under "Company profile" also need to reflect the structural changes that I requested above in the introduction, as Jenoptik is now a purely photonic group and focuses on new industries. It could say the following:
→"Jenoptik divides its activities into two photonics-based divisions: “Advanced Photonic Solutions” and “Smart Mobility Solutions.” The new brand Vincorion is dedicated to the mechatronic business of Jenoptik. Under the TRIOPTICS brand, Jenoptik also develops and manufactures optical test and manufacturing systems, and non-photonic activities are operated within the group’s “Non-Photonic Portfolio” companies.
The group’s worldwide customers mainly consist of companies in the semiconductor equipment, electronics, life science and medical technology, and traffic and security industries."
- Inserted comment The divisional breakdown/structural changes info couldn't be properly sourced, so it was removed. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
4) This sentence is no longer correct in the following paragraph; “Jenoptik has around 4,000 employees and in 2018 generated sales of 834 million Euros.” Rather, it should now read:
→“Jenoptik has around 4,900 employees and in 2021 generated revenue of 750,5 million Euros.”[3]
- Inserted comment The 2020 annual report counts 4,500 employees and 767 million Euros group revenue. The 2021 annual report linked here states 895 million Euros, and 4,905 employees. [[3]] TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
5) In the paragraph beginning with "Dr. Stefan Traeger..." in the Company profile section, it can be designated that Hans-Dieter Schumacher will be the chief financial officer only until March 2023, as this is a new development.
- Inserted comment Predicting the future without a source is called WP:CRYSTAL and is discouraged. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
6) After the paragraph beginning with “In August 2017…” and ending with “…laser-machine business,” an additional paragraph should be added that contains information about further acquisitions and business restructuring. It could read as follows:
→“In 2018, Jenoptik acquired Prodomax Automation Ltd., a Canadian manufacturer of automated production lines, to add to their technology portfolio of laser processing and automation. In the same year, the company branded its mechatronic business division as VINCORION, which was responsible for products within the aviation, security, defense and railroad industries.”[4]
- Inserted comment Added Prodomax acquisition with this source. [[4]] TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
→If this change is made, please delete the following paragraph beginning with “From September 2018…” because the above change better consolidates this information.
More business restructuring information is missing after 2019. I would suggest the following changes to remove unneutral language and add up-to-date information:
7) Delete the sentences reading, “The three divisions are building on their common core competencies in photonics. This includes know-how in optics, sensor technology, imaging, robotics, data analysis and man-machine interfaces.” They are unneutral and unnecessary.
8) To end this paragraph, please add the following information: “In December 2021, the company released a new business strategy, Agenda 2025 ‘More Value,’ and an organizational restructuring took effect in April 2022. The group focused its operations on purely photonics technologies by consolidating its three prior divisions into two: “Advanced Photonics Solutions” and “Smart Mobility Solutions.” Since the 2022 restructuring, Jenoptik’s primary markets are the semiconductor equipment and electronics, life science and medical technology, and traffic and security industries. Its non-photonic activities, particularly within the automotive market, operate within the group’s “Non-Photonic Portfolio Companies.” [5]
- Inserted comment Need source. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Inserted comment I went ahead and implemented it since a source was added. Aaron Liu (talk) 11:54, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
With this, I would like to suggest updated history since 2019, since no additional happenings have been added to the page since then. Please, therefore, add the following information at the end of the “Company profile” section:
9) “As of September 2020, Jenoptik acquired the Hamburg-based optics group TRIOPTICS, an international supplier of test equipment and manufacturing systems for optical components and digitalization. In late 2021, the company acquired BG Medical Applications GmbH, a supplier of precision optical components for the medical technology sector, and the SwissOptic Group, a developer and manufacturer of optical components and assemblies for the medical technology, semiconductor and metrology sectors.”[6]
10) “As a partner in NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, Jenoptik produced lens assemblies for the engineering cameras of the Mars rover, Perseverance, which began its expedition on Mars in February 2021.”[7]
11) “In November 2021, Jenoptik became a member of the United Nations Global Compact network for corporate responsibility and committed to compliance with integrating aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals into its business strategies.”[8]
Due to the company restructuring in 2022, I would like to suggest the following edits to the "Group structure and business activities" section. The "Light and Optics," "Light and Production Division," and "Light and Safety" sections are now obsolete. This could be deleted and replaced by the following sections:
12) "Advanced Photonic Solutions: The “Advanced Photonic Solutions” division of Jenoptik is a global OEM and machine supplier of photonic technologies. Their products span across the fields of optics, laser technology, digital imaging, optoelectronics, sensors, as well as optical testing and measurement equipment. Their products are mainly used by machine and equipment manufacturers in the semiconductor, laser material processing, life science and biophotonics, industrial automation, automotive and security industries."
13) "Smart Mobility Solutions: In this business division, Jenoptik produces technologies for vehicle monitoring and classification and average speed, spot speed and red-light enforcement. These products also include civil security, road user charging and emission control that use video analytics and artificial intelligence."
Following, I would suggest the creation of a new subsectio called "Other Business Activities" so as to separate the business structure from acquistiions and to not confuse readers. Under "Other Business Activities," the following section could be added to explain the company's involvement outside of the photonic sector:
14) "Jenoptik’s “Non-Photonic Portfolio Companies” work predominately with companies in the automotive industry. Theseir products for industrial customers are used mainly for production processes. They produce both stand-alone products and complete, automated systems for production processes and contribute to research and technological development in e-mobility and autonomous driving. The companies also develop and manufacture industrial metrology systems for quality control in production."
15) Under the “Vincorion” sub-section within the "Other Business Activities" section, changes need made because the business is in the process of selling Vincorion, and so the information is not entirely correct. The following would make it correct:
→Please add “(until 2022)” after the header “Vincorion.”
→Please add the following excerpt either before or after the bullet points to explain the history of this division: “After Jenoptik announced in July 2019 that VINCORION would be sold to concentrate the business on the core markets of lasers, measuring technology and optical systems. In Novmber 2021, Jenoptik announced that it signed an agreement to sell the VINCORION division to STAR Capital Partnership LLP. The closing of the deal is expected to take place in the second half of 2022.“
16) The following acquisitions could also be added to the “Group structure and business activities” section to make the history more complete:
→“Trioptics: Trioptics retains its brand and represents the test equipment business within the Jenoptik group.”
→“Measurement and manufacturing systems for optical components”
→“Sensors for digitalization and semiconductor technology”
→“Virtual und Augmented Reality“
→“Medical and diagnosis technology, optics manufacturing and life sciences”
“BG Medical Applications GmbH: BG Medical is now Jenoptik Medical and is an OEM supplier for medical technology and life sciences. The company was acquired by Jenoptik in 2021. Following the closing of the acquisition, the name was changed to JENOPTIK Medical GmbH in 2022.“
→“High-precision, custom optical components for medical technology sector”
→“Technology applications for dental and robotic surgery”
“SwissOptic Group”
→“Optical components and assemblies”
→“Medical technology in ophthalmology and life sciences”
→“Semiconductor and metrology” ConnyKM (talk) 13:14, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- This seems to be a good-faith effort with the potential to improve the article, if only because of the sorry state it is currently in. I tried to fix a few things but gave up because it is slightly overwhelming. If I may offer some suggestions, with the caveat that these are mine, possibly subjective, and that I have no special authority:
- I have trouble following your edit request. This may be a problem of the template and the process you are required to follow. But any improvement may be helpful here, such as using
strikeoutor colored backgrounds to indicate current and requested new text would be helpful. You may also want to split the request up into several smaller ones. - Make sure to include all formatting and links as they are supposed to be. The mars rover Perseverance, for example, should certainly be a link.
- Bold and ALL-CAPS should be used rarely. as in: almost never. NASA is fine, TRIOPTICS is not. How can you tell? If in doubt, check how the New York Times does it. This article includes Trioptics, NASA is left as an exercise for the reader.
- Of the references you give, optics.org, marketscreener.com, and wileyindustrynews.com seem to just be publishers of press releases. Those aren't acceptable sources.
- I have a vague idea what an integrated photonics group may be, but I have an even stronger allergy against the term. I wish I could be more specific. The two photonics-based divisions suffer from the same vague problem; as a first step, the copy could be markedly improved by deleting the words global, international, and worldwide, except as part of that UN initiative
- Speaking of which: I have no idea what [...] committed to compliance with integrating aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals into its business strategies is supposed to mean, and neither does whoever wrote that.
- All these acquisitions don't seem significant enough to warrant inclusion. Note that you don't care about any but the most recent/ongoing acquisitions. Consider the reader here to be interested only in matters that the company would still care about ten years from now.
- Speaking of which: that New York Times article from 2019 is far more interesting...
- I have trouble following your edit request. This may be a problem of the template and the process you are required to follow. But any improvement may be helpful here, such as using
- So much for now. Maybe others can chime in and point out where I am completely wrong. K. Oblique 03:17, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
- @ConnyKM: @Karl Oblique: I restructured the article and removed the COI tag. See edit history. This is a better starting point now. I'll also take a look at the edit requests, but it won't be all at once. This is a long request. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:37, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
- @ConnyKM: @Karl Oblique: I finally got around to looking at this. The source announcing the restructuring isn't great. It looks like a repurposed press release. And the old division structure info wasn't sourced either, so I just removed that from the lead. I also moved the customer info to the body from the lead. It's likely one of the reasons the article was flagged for being promotional. The entire group structure section was overly detailed and completely unsourced, so I removed that. Now we can work to find sources to build up the info that is about the company today. But please, nothing clearly based on a word for word cut and paste of a company press release. We're getting there. Soon I can hopefully remove the advert and coi flags. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 04:48, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Timtempleton @Karl Oblique Apologies for the late response. Thank you so much for your work & support! I appreciate it very much while I'm trying to find & provide better sources and improve reporting. ConnyKM (talk) 06:47, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- @ConnyKM: I tried to break out your request into numbered items, since there's so much and it's hard to address all at once. I also started inserting comments with each. If you can find good sources for the other info you want added/changed, please add them to the comments in double brackets like this [[5]] and ping me.TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
