"First gay player" – not
[edit]@Hshook and Tevlev3: Jason Ball wrote an opinion piece in March 2014 claiming that he was "the first Aussie Rules player at any level" to come out, which is a pretty big claim to make. It's a claim that other sources have since repeated. However, earlier news stories made no mention of Ball being the first player to come out at any level. Given most sports have had openly gay players since at least the 1990s, it would be very peculiar if Australian football took another 20 years for that to occur. The evidence suggests Ball's claim is misguided. For example, according to Jason Akermanis in 2010: "I have played with a gay player in the twos for Mayne in Queensland in the mid-1990s who was happy to admit his sexual persuasion. He was a great guy who played his heart out and was respected by everyone in the team." And there have certainly been lesbian players prior to Ball. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote this month: "Ball […] came to prominence as an openly gay Aussie Rules footballer…", not "the first". So I think we need to reassess how we're describing Ball in this article. 203.59.133.113 (talk) 04:15, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
