Editing Jardine Lloyd Thompson
[edit]I am about to make a few small changes to this page, which I believe are will be helpful and will, in all probability, fall into the category of 'non-controversial edits'. The reason I mention it is because there is potential for a conflict of interest from my standpoint in relation to JLT, being that I work for JLT in the group communications department and I am currently tasked with ensuring that the Wikipedia content about JLT is up to date and factually accurate. Further down the line, I shall probably have more substantial changes to make, however, my plan in this case is to ask for input and seek consensus via my discussion page rather than making direct edits. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. With thanks and regards, --ThomasHare (talk) 14:41, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have just noticed this. If you are an employee of the company you have a conflict of interest and you should not be making edits per WP:COI. Nor should you be deleting sourced information and inserting unsourced information as that would be in breach of WP:SOURCE. Thank you. Dormskirk (talk) 21:20, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
- The content appears unbiased to me. It's rather sketchy and could use amplification. Some acronyms are not explained. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.99.95.139 (talk) 23:34, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
In light of Domskirk’s challenge to the previously edited content that I had uploaded, it would seem that the best course of action that I can take, is to:
A) Cite references in a more specific fashion
B) Include more content
I see no reason that should inherently suggest that my affiliation to the JLT Group (JLT) should present a conflict of interests. JLT is a publicly quoted company and is, as such, subject to various legislation regarding financial disclosure and misrepresentation, which dictates its employees' conduct, particularly that of employees in roles like my own (Communications Executive).
Some of the information relating to the Group in the article in its current state is not only incomplete, but also factually inaccurate. My involvement in the maintenance of this page is driven by a wish to give an accurate and current picture of the Group, rather than to skew the impression given to suit an ulterior agenda.
I shall proceed with further edits, and in doing so in stages in order to compile as complete a picture of the Group as possible.
I will also seek to cite references were applicable, many of which I anticipate will be from our annual report and accounts, which have of course been independently audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Please do not hesitate to raise any further issues with me.
With Regards,
Tom Hare

- I appreciate that you are new to this but wikipedia has its own standards as well. The relevant guideline is WP:COI. I note your stated intention to disregard the guideline. It is interesting that one the larger companies is this sector so openly disregards compliance on conflicts of interest. I would hope that this culture is not widespread! Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:49, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Dormskirk. There is a section in the guideline you’ve referred to that discusses the practice of disclosure of affiliation to a subject organisation in order to mitigate against conflicts of interest. Being that this is clearly only acceptable in some circumstances, would posting proposed edits on the talk page so that someone else can make those edits be acceptable? For example I would suggest amending the financial data in the infobox to include the group’s latest financial results, citing the JLT Group Annual Report 2012 as the reference, for example:
Total revenue £880.1 Underlying trading profit £160.4 Underlying profit before tax £161.7 Reported profit before tax £156.8
I’m more than happy to do this, it just seems strange to have to rely on favours from other users in what could become a fairly time consuming process.

- There is no problem asking me to make the changes. I have corrected the turnover - I can see the figure which appeared previously in the article excluded investment income - I have corrected this. As regards Underlying profit before tax and Reported profit before tax, unfortunately these are not parameters wikipedia uses. The standard infobox is only capable of accepting revenue, operating profit and net profit: anything else will just not be visable. Sorry! Dormskirk (talk) 20:12, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
Dormskirk,
Thanks very much for your help on this. the reason I was keen to look into this, is that we are releasing our interim results on Tuesday 30th of June, so when those figures are publicly available, can I refer back to you with the up to date info?
As for other information (history, etc) I'm currently putting together a more comprehensive overview of the Group's history, complete with sources, which I shall post on this page shortly for review.
With thanks and regards,

- OK. No problem. Please bear in mind (i) we only update with full year results not interims (ii) any additions to the history in this article need to come from independent sources (see WP:SOURCE) not the company. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 21:35, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Dormskirk,
In my opinion, there is a lot of emphasis here on only three acquisitions in the history section. Might I suggest that we put in a few more acquistions (major ones) as part of a new section entitled 'Acquisitions'.
The iWM and Alexander Forbes acquisitions could then be removed from the history section, which I propose should be updated and fleshed out a bit.
While I put together some copy for the history section, I'd suggest the following additions to the proposed 'Acquisitions' section:
In May 2013 The Group acquired PT GESA Assistance (GESA) and PT Global Asistensi Manajemen Indonesia (GAMI), two Indonesian healthcare management and third party administration service providers, combining them to form PT JLT GESA. Financial terms were not disclosed. Reference: http://www.insuranceinsight.com/insurance-insight/news/2267805/jlt-acquires-in-indonesia
In February 2013 The group acquired Insfield Insurance Brokers Sdn Bhd in Malaysia. Financial Terms were not disclosed. Reference: http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/international/2013/02/01/279638.htm
In October 2012 The Group acquired Alexander Forbes Consultants and Actuaries for a purchase price of £17 million. Reference: http://www.healthinsurancedaily.com/health-insurance/product-area/pmi/article408887.ece
In May 2012 The Group acquired Towner Management Group’s Barbados business and operations. Towner’s US arm, Towner Management group US also entered into a join Venture with the JLT Group, resulting in Towner’s rebranding as JLT Towner. Financial terms were not disclosed. I look forward to your comments,

- I have added this material. However we need balance and to avoid suggestions that I have been following your requests verbatim (which would be breach of WP:COI and breach of WP:ADVERT) we need to see critical material as well as positive copy. While quite often the reader would expect to see a criticisms section, instead I have chosen to introduce a mild comment on the Vyvienne Wade move which attracted considerable media attention at the time. She actually referred to “insulting and demeaning” treatment but I have toned this down. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 22:40, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
JLT employee (another one!)
[edit]I'm a long-time editor of a wide range of topics, who cannot edit this article due to COI. As a JLT employee, I would expect to see 'broking' or 'broker' in the first line - the reader is given the impression that JLT is an insurance company, which is misleading not least from a regulatory perspective - JLT is a broker, risk management adviser and Managing General Agent, but doesn't technically underwrite, AFAIK.
Could an independent editor also please kindly do a quick comparison with Willis_Group, Aon_(company), and Marsh_&_McLennan_Companies articles? You'll see the JLT article might easily become more robust with the addition of:
- photography (I think I could provide a St Botolph's Building article without straying into COI, to add to the Grimshaw Architects list, with pictures I take that could then be re-used here)
- industry = Insurance broker
- Some kind of acknowledgement of JLT's role as a major producer in the London Market (Lloyds, etc)
I'll track this talk page for your kindly f/b, thanks.
- All done. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:39, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- Good stuff, like it. Dormskirk, could you take a look at the draft item for the St Botolph's Building I've slapped together today in my sandbox? I'd appreciate your perspective on whether there are any COI issues to be conscious of? Adhibb (talk) 12:29, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- Never mind - I've gone ahead with it! Adhib (talk) 16:47, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- It looks good. Dormskirk (talk) 23:52, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- Great, many thanks. Adhib (talk) 06:53, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

JLT employee (yet another one!)
[edit]I've just recently joined JLT to head up their external communications and one of the things I'm doing is checking that information about JLT is up-to-date on various online resources. I'm quite new to Wikipedia, although I'm trying my hand at editing (baby steps!), but I know I can't update the JLT page myself because of my COI. Is there an independent editor who would consider reviewing the history section? At the moment, it doesn't include any developments after February 2013, and there actually have been a few. For example, in 2013, JLT acquired Towers Watson Re - the merged business is now the fourth largest reinsurance brokerage in the world. Also, in 2014, JLT established a new business in the US, which was quite a significant step (from its point of view!). I'd be happy to help track down sources, of course, if somebody could help?
Many thanks
