When the Yi family was established in 1392 as the Joseon Dynasty, the new monarchy on the Korean penninsula sought to establish "neighborly relations" (gyorin) with Japan. At this time, all Japanese who had been helpful to the newly royal house were conferred with honorific titles from the new government. The only obligation of the Jushiki Wajin was to present themselves at the Korean court once a year, wearing the insignia that had been conferred on them.<:ref>Nussbaum, Louis Frédéric et al. (2005).
