To that person working for the Univ adm who keeps on deleting the paragraph about the protest: It is a FACT that there is a large number of students and the faculty protesting her selection. Accept it. Leave the page alone.

Nope, the Washington Post didn't understand the reasons for protesting at first due to communication problems. It's really unethical of you to include early newspaper coverage when reporters didn't understand the subject fully. Pulsar20

What reasons if not cultural?

"Specifically, Fernandes attracted opposition due to her opposition to establishing an ASL-only environment on campus..." This is a pure conjecture. Not to mention the fact that JKF never indicated such a position, she actually uses ASL both on and off campus. The crucial reason for the protest against JKF's appointment and the subsequent JKF defeat is JKF's lack of leadership. At no time have we seen supporters rallying behind her during the protest.

Hello, I've been trying to follow this controversy and have been having a hard time. Basically, the first version of the story I've heard is the "not deaf enough" version; later, I've heard that this is a "caricature", but haven't heard any specific other reasons cited. This article is frustratingly vague on the subject, saying only that "The protesters point to her past decisions that they feel are questionable and don't reflect qualities of a solid leader" and "Some students also criticized Fernandes for not having warm relations with students". These strike me as being extremely nonspecific for someone who has engendered such depth of feeling. I'm not doubting that there are other reasons for opposition to her appointment, but I would like to hear more specific reasons. What past decisions of hers are questionable and reflect poorly on her leadership? Are there specific incidents of relations with students that are less than warm? And if protest signs at Gallaudet are readin "You're killing our culture!" (as cited here), how does that fit in with the alternative explanation? --Jfruh (talk) 01:35, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

What's with all the references to her race in the quote? Does this have some meaning within the Deaf community that people outside of that community do not understand? Like is there some significant difference between the white Deaf community and the Deaf communities of other races? This needs to be explained. As it stands, it looks like she might be racist for mentioning her race, even repeatedly, when it doesn't appear to be at all relevant. I'm sorry for doing POV (I thought the "reproaches on her non-ASL education as well as misgivings concerning her position on racial issues" were the reasons for the protests, and thus considered "facts"). If, however, my "try" to explain the meaning failed, the question that the quote should express has to be rewarmed! Even more, as I can't find any reference to verify it. Clarification

Bringing NPOV Back

I was astonished to find the entire section about the protest was pro-Fernandes. Commentary on the opposing views was derisive and a clear negative subtext was present. I was tempted to wipe out the entire section and start over, but in the interest of keeping things as NPOV as possible, I simply provided an alternative viewpoint. Whoever was posting such pro-Fernandes commentary and criticizing the protesters so harshly, please respect the NPOV goals of Wikipedia and leave both sections intact. -Etoile 14:04, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Citation of Application

I'll be honest, while I find the conclusion of her application kind of odd, I think its unfair to cite the part that is cited, as she follows it up with the statement that she DOES believe in visual communication. I'm going to change it so its a fuller quote (though it still oddball as hell to mention that she's white over and over again, when the issue she seems most concerned about is the fact that she was a late user of ASL and her family was oral, not visual). weird sentence

It refers to the fact that her parents and several other family members are deaf. The sentence is unspecific and irrelevant, given that her parents' deafness is mentioned in the preceding line. "Viewpoint of Fernandes Supporters" Section

The content of the Viewpoint of Fernandes Supporters section seems to only contain negative information about her. It would seem that most of it is more appropriate for the Viewpoint of Fernandes Opponents section. I am unfamiliar with this situation, but the article seems not to be neutral to me. Specifically, the following excerpts from this section do not seem to characterize "support" of Fernandes:

• scores of students protested against her appointment
• Students objected to the appointment of Jane Fernandes
• Some students also criticized Fernandes for...
• Opponents of Fernandes claim...
• Fernandes also attracted opposition due to...
• Allegations of racism in appointing Fernandes, who is white, were also raised.
• organizations of students of color had protested...
• 36% gave Fernandes an "acceptable" rating, compared to 53% and 64% for the two other finalists.
