English or American, or even both

[edit]

I am a bit bemused that the writers and editors of this article make reference to "critical acclaim" and Bamber's nomination for a minor award, but totally ignore the fact that neither Bamber not BSG won one single major award. BSG didn't win any Emmy awards and was totally ignored by the BAFTAs. It's viewing figures fell steadily after the first year and the show was bounced around the TV schedule. Why not provide accurate information? Reading Wikipedia, you would think that Bamber and BSG were accorded numerous accolades. BE ACCURATE. This isn't a fan site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.167.53 (talk) 22:44, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article starts with "..is an English actor", then goes on to say "holds American citizenship". So which is it? British or American - I see national flags for the other co-stars of Galactica. The article could even call him British-American, that would at least be accurate and not contradictory as it stands now. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.181.218.153 (talkcontribs).

I've updated the intro to say "English-American", reflecting his dual nationality. (This way it sounds like he emigrated, but in fact he still lives in London. One might say American-English, but you never hear that.) --Dhartung | Talk 06:29, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but does he actually hold US citizenship? that was added two months by an unregistered user and didnt cite a source, I know he still speaks with an strong English accent in real life.Johnny 0 21:13, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As the son of an American father, citizenship is automatic; he would have to specifically renounce it. See United States nationality law#Through birth abroad to one United States citizen. Anyway, I found a source.--Dhartung | Talk 09:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

surely he is American by descent not by birth - if he was born in Hammersmith.

He's an English/British actor irrelevant of his father's citizenship on the basis that he was born, raised, and it a citizen of Britain. He may not have renounced his American citizenship but this is a technicality not a practicality of his upbringing. Calling Jamie Bamber American is like calling James Joyce British (as we was by citizenship). Have edited as such.London prophet (talk) 23:56, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jamie Bamber was born in Hammersmith to a British mother and an American father who had emigrated to England. He has never denied being British and his Britishness is obvious from his natural accent. He was also born and education through college in England, working in the US for the first time in 2005. He holds a US passport under what is called 'derivative citizenship', US law granting citizenship to the children of US citizens. His wife and three children are British. He has most definitely not emigrated to the US but works there and in the UK. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.172.30.1 (talk) 15:17, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I frankly don't see the big deal! So what if he is British? Many actors are. If you listen to him talk, you can immediately tell that he speaks with the British call "standard received English", in other words, high class English. Not surprising given that he went to an elite English private school and Cambridge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.172.30.1 (talk) 15:28, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WHY WAS THE ENTRY CHANGED TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE BAMBER IS AN AMERICAN WHO "RETAINS" HIS BRITISH CITIZENSHIP. THIS ISN'T TRUE. BAMBER WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THE UK. HE IS A BRITISH SUBJECT. HE HOLDS AN AMERICAN PASSPORT AS HIS SECOND CITIZENSHIP. IT IS DEEPLY OFFENSIVE THAT AMERICANS ARE CHANGING THE ENTRY OF A BRITISH ACTOR TO MAKE IT SEEM THAT HE IS AMERICAN!! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD HIM SPEAK NATURALLY? HE CERTAINLY ISN'T AMERICAN1 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dcnyc79 (talkcontribs) 22:00, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He certainly is an American citizen as well, and has taken no steps to renounce that. Typing in caps and babbling about being offended don't change facts. Using terms like "'derivative citizenship" make it seem as if it is pure technicality.

Quote:"HAVE YOU EVER HEARD HIM SPEAK NATURALLY? HE CERTAINLY ISN'T AMERICAN1" Are you truely that stupid? (24.62.126.170 (talk) 08:13, 16 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Since Bamber refers to himself as being British, I guess we should go with his view. Plus there is the little fact that he was born in the UK, raised in London and has worked in London for all but five years. Don't know why this is such an issue. Many foreign nationals also hold US passports.

Actually, no. You can only hold a US passport if you are a US citizen. The fact remains: while he, himself, identifies as British, he holds dual citizenship and is thus also an American. It is, of course, his own choice as to how to self-identify, and I agree that we should honor that choice by listing him as a British actor, but legally, he is just as much an American as he is British. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.118.192.94 (talk) 19:21, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This site states that Bamber is "best known" for Battlestar Galactica. That show ended several years ago. He has been in Law & Order: UK for a number of years, so shouldn't we really focus on his recent work? Plus the fact is that Law & Order enjoys a much larger audience than BSG, so it is arguable whether he is still "best" known for BSG.

Newsflash! Bamber is also Irish. His mother is a Catholic from Northern Ireland and was a dual British/Irish citizen. Jamie thus holds three citizenships and nationalities: British, Irish and American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.164.247 (talk) 21:08, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well actually he may be eligible to claim an Irish passport but he would actually need to be proactive. He isn't automatically an Irish national. Sue De Nimes (talk) 21:42, 4 April 2011 (UTC). This is incorrect. Bamber's mother is an Irish citizen. Under Irish nationality law, Bamber is automatically an Irish citizen. No action is required. The action you refer to only applies to individuals born to Irish citizens by descent or individuals claiming Irish citizenship through a grandparent. You should check your facts.[reply]

So...

[edit]

If he was born in Hammersmith, does that make him a Hammersmith Apollo?

I'll get my coat... Angmering 13:48, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That comment just cheered my day up no end. Spanglej (talk) 15:25, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This entry reads like a publicity blurb and not something for an encyclopaedia. I think the group working on this, and other entries, should try to ensure that they don't sound like they were written by fan clubs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.121.17.73 (talk) 19:29, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This and a huge number of other articles about people who are well known for one reason or another - that's where wiki falls down massively, i.e. too much editing done by "fans" (for fan, read PR Team). Face it - unless the article is about one of the Hitlers or Stalins of this world, anything negative and citeable will get removed pretty sharpish in far too many instances - I'm not saying this is the case with Jamie Bamber, but it goes on far too much, especially with actors, singers and politicians. 90.214.159.130 (talk) 03:21, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Filmography

[edit]

The Filmography doesn't look anywhere near complete. Why is Pulse 2 missing? That's probably just as well, given the poor reviews it received! 86.172.30.1 (talk) 13:16, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Bamber is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC (THE North London Club that play in the BLP - English Premier League)" he said this on SoccerAM on SKY Sports on Sat 28 March 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eddie Punch (talkcontribs) 14:54, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why bring up Pulse 2? We all make mistakes. I imagine he wouldn't want it cited either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.131.115.93 (talk) 21:20, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is even more funny that Ghost Rig is somehow missing!! That movie makes Pulse 2 look great! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.131.117.49 (talk) 08:44, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ghost Rig was not that bad and can actually still be found in stores. Pulse 2 was truly awful and is virtually unavailable. It never was released outside the USA. I think we should "pardon" him and delete both references. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.164.247 (talk) 21:06, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not to be pedantic, but if Wikipedia is to be truly an information source and not a PR site, then the information contained should be complete and factual. This entry, like many others, lacks objectivity. It reads like it was written by fans. Comments about how poorly BSG did in the ratings, how it faced cancellation several times, and how it was bounced all over the week in a futile attempt to boost its viewing figures, have all been deleted. Ironically, Jamie Bamber himself has commented on how BSG survived thanks to its small but dedicated fan base. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.165.68.66 (talk) 22:12, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This article is borderline a stub / start. Needs more content describing the actor's bio. Morphh 23:17, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
