Statewide office holders

[edit]

One of the sources said he was the last African American to hold statewide office in Mississippi. This article says Mississippi has the highest percentage of African Americans of any state and the last to hold statewide office was in 1890. FloridaArmy (talk) 15:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure it wasn't the first? Sounds more likely. ——Serial # 18:01, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

James Hill Street

[edit]

Who is James Hill Street in Jackson named for?

FloridaArmy I had a look but not had any luck. The oldest reference for the "James Hill Street"/"James Hill St" in newspapers.com I can find is 1944, and I can't see any historical articles later. Same for newspaperarchive.com I did find a couple of other sources though so not a waste of time :) - Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 16:49, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great!!! The newspaper obit you found is quite interesting. Thanks so much for your help User:KylieTastic. Sorry if I caused any edit conflicts. Sometimes the urge to tweak something is irresistible. I am off the page now for a good while.. Take care. Thanks again. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:24, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

James Hill High

[edit]

The James Hill High article suggests, (unsourced) it was named in 1913 for its founder. This conflicts with the sourced statement here about this James Hill who died in 1903 (or perhaps 1901 according the to one of the books cited). FloridaArmy (talk) 02:58, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • FloridaArmy yup that's an odd one. The school history page does say "founded in 1912 by James Hill" but this says the principle of the school wrote that it was named after our guy, also this this and this all say the same. I think the school got it wrong, and the story has just got distorted along the way or the person who does the website just doesn't care or someone copy-edited and assumed - the older sources seam more trustworthy. (Could email them and tell them to stop disrespecting the past) I think the same goes for the DOD - later sources say 1901 (one says 00-00-1901 ?) - but I can't see how the newspaper reports from the day he died could have been mistaken.
