I haven't included a link in the text to Thomas Bayne (Sam Nixon), an article I just posted about an African American active in the same Virginia Constitutional Convention as Platt. The Encyclopedia of Virginia article I have cited for other points may rely on a recent history of Norfolk (Norfolk: the first four centuries at p. 238)), which indicates Bayne ran for the 2nd district seat, but he and Platt split the vote, and a unnamed Conservative was elected. The problem is that the dates don't match, or I trust the U.S. Congressional biography more than the University of Virginia Press citechecker on that seemingly minor point before the posted Virginia election returned.
