So the reference is broken and I believe it to be incorrect - so I've removed both it and the text.

I'll try to track down a reference for the remaining part - the year he joined.

Sun Controversy

[edit]

I'm an ex-private and I think it is important that the recent sun controversy is included in the wiki article. I am also concerned that my additions to the article were undone by somebody with a handle referencing the British Army. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.143.95.83 (talk) 20:26, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The material should be removed because (i) it may be a newsworthy event but it is not encyclopedic i.e. it is a clear breach of WP:NOTNEWS (ii) it has been lifted word for word from a Telegraph article so it is a clear breach of copyright (iii) it has been written without a clear long term view of history i.e. it is a clear breach of WP:RECENT. Dormskirk (talk) 22:58, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The IP address of somebody who removed the the reference to the sun letter leak originates from very close to where the general works. Coincidence? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.143.128.21 (talk) 20:47, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Early career

[edit]

...Cowan joined the Territorial Army as a private soldier in 1982.[1] He was deployed to Northern Ireland during The Troubles... As I understand it, TA soldiers were never allowed to serve in Northern Ireland or indeed any civil conflicts within the UK, did he join the regulars at some point before Oxford and his commission? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.196.250.154 (talk) 22:11, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think he must have been commissioned into the Regular Army in 1987. Dormskirk (talk) 22:14, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
