Month of death almost certainly wrong
[edit]The Los Angeles Herald for June 18, 1904, includes the following item [see Los Angeles Herald 18 June 1904 — California Digital Newspaper Collection (ucr.edu)]:
"Rear Admiral J. N. Greer WASHINGTON, D. C., June 17.—Rear Admiral James N. Greer, U. S. N., retired, died today, aged 72 years."
Despite the incorrect middle initial and the slightly incorrect age, it seems practically certain that this refers to James Agustin Greer, and therefore that the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships is incorrect in giving his date of death as 17 January 1904 rather than 17 June 1904. Greer's age at death is therefore also incorrect in this article's infobox -- he was 71 years old when he died, not 70 or 72.
It is profoundly discouraging to me to find such an error in DANFS, which I, and probably many other editors, am accustomed to regard as a totally reliable source. Gildir (talk) 07:31, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
