[edit]

I removed unrelated and improper picture and information related to Fw-190 aircraft, which was misleading to this topic, since JV 44 was a Me-262 squadron. (windturbine)

JV-44 flew Me-262 aircraft. The Me-262 took a long time for the turbines to run up and develop thrust, and this aircraft was vulnerable to being shot down during the takeoff run. On landing a greater distance was needed for approach and the aircraft was vulnerable at this time as well.

Early on (after D-day) the Luftwaffe tried to provide protection to it's aircraft and airstrips with units of fighter aircraft that were separate from Jv-44. These units were not successful.

Galland formed his own protection unit attached directly to Jv-44. For these reasons, JV-44 also had Fw-190 D-9's and D-11 aircraft. These aircraft flew top cover during takeoff and landings. These aircraft were commanded by Lt. Heinz Sachsenberg. A quote of Adolf Galland is "Sachsenberg was a good pilot...we felt safer when his aircraft were in the air."

Therefore the Fw-190 aircraft was significant to the operations of Jv-44. Not more than the Me-262, but to remove the information misleads people. The original article was quite clear.

I accept your decission, but original documents in my hands telling a bit different Story. Not Galland founded JV 44, he got the ORDER to do so. Its not correct that JV 44 was founded as pure Jet Squadron, the Platzschutz was included in this order. The picture you removed was a original Skin from original RLM Color Cards of this special unit. It was the red 1 plane, flown by Heinz Sachsenberg....

Greetings Klaus Bohnen

We should definently merge this article with whatever info can be found in the Jagdverbande 44 article, and this article should be made a redirect, seeing as using the full name for the Verbande is more uniform. Abel29a 17:39, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not much usefull in the otherone - I'm gonna copy what is there and set the page as a redirect - it's a misspelled name anyway. Abel29a 18:01, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mfields1: How bout making a table with the complete roster, but adding little information save rank and perhaps kills during service with the unit. Then the rest of the info could be added to the individual pilots page (as and when they are created.) But then again the complete table wouldnt be unmanagable large, and putting it at the bottom of the article wouldnt interfere with reading the rest.

One alternative is to add a separate JV 44 roster article, and that seems a bit redundant.

First Kill:

"A Kette of 3 Me 262s led by Oberst Steinhoff mounted the first combat mission by JV 44 in late March, Steinoff claiming a Soviet Il-2 shot down."

This cannot be correct, unless Steinhoff was seconded somewhere. Munich is far from the Soviet zone of operations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.10.237.141 (talk) 06:24, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment

[edit]

Heres a short analysis of how I think the page can be improved:

1. Add pictures and Photos. Not necessarily of only the sqn. Me-262 and Galland pics are also a good addition, in my opinion.
2. More refs, better organized and cited referencing, in addition to in-text references are essential. Only referencing from books deprives readers the opportunity to explore the topic further. Try and get links to websites with more information.
3. More details about the combat service of the sqn are welcome.
4. grammer and organization could be improved a bit.
5. Organize the roster better... you could make it into a table and give details about the number of kills/srvice record of the pilot and his fate (if he was killed in service).
6. More information, especially technical about the planes (numbers, special features, etc) is welcome.
7. the service record of the sqn could also be put in a table, to give readers a quick overview. (this is just a suggestion, and you may have to consult the manual of style to see if it is ok).

I've not been able to give a more detailed assessment due to paucity of time. Overall, this is a good page, and with improvements, can be a GA candidate. I suggest that someone put their name here as a regular contributer, so that the page can be improved. Keep up the good work. Cheers. Sniperz11talk|edits 10:48, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Number of victories by Galland

[edit]

It's a minor point but the article lists Galland as having 103 victories, his Wiki page states 104.Historian932 (talk) 23:43, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About Bär / Eder...

[edit]

Georg-Peter Eder never served in JV 44. He got his jet kills in Kommando Nowotny and Jagdgeschwader 7. Heinz Bär did not score 16 kills while in JV44. He got his most jet kills in EJG 2. 128.214.198.152 (talk) 12:33, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
