Composer project review

[edit]

I've reviewed this article as part of the Composers project review of its B-class articles. This article merits promotion to A, and should be peer reviewed for recommendations on improvements needed for FA consideration. It could use more images; there are other minor complaints. My review is on the comments page; questions and comments can go here or on my talk page. Magic♪piano 03:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A-Class?

[edit]

I'm sorry, but there is no way that this article is A-Class. Look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Composers/Assessment#Quality_scale, and compare this article with the articles just below it (Karlheinz Stockhausen and Arthur Sullivan). This has to be some joke. --Toccata quarta (talk) 07:54, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From the description: "Very useful to readers. A fairly complete treatment of the subject. A non-expert in the subject matter would typically find nothing wanting. May miss a few relevant points." What would a non-expert find wanting? what relevant points are missed? Is it not a fairly complete treatment of the subject?
Thank you for your opinion. If you could do a better job on Arcadelt, have at it. I spent a lot of time putting this together from many sources. If you would like to "upgrade" it to what you think is "A" class, nothing is stopping you. Oh, and let me add, how would you feel if some drive-by opininator showed up at an article you'd written and said about it, "has to be some joke"? I'd say more but I try to comply with our civility policy. Have a nice day, Antandrus (talk) 05:02, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You missed my point entirely. By your logic, readers (who provide feedback at the bottom of this page) should not be allowed to express dissatisfaction with it, but rather should work on it if they find it lacking.
As for "[H]ow would you feel if some drive-by opininator showed up at an article you'd written and said about it, 'has to be some joke'?", that's a straw-man fallacy; I was speaking of the article's quality assessment, not its content. --Toccata quarta (talk) 05:34, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessing: retains A class. I know quite a bit about Renaissance music but I'm not an Arcadelt expert and I didn't see anything I could easily add or want to change about the subject. I think the big problem is that the project gives too few A classes, not too many. -- Michael Scott Cuthbert (talk) 01:02, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

==Composers Project Assessment of Jacques Arcadelt: 2008-12-24==

This is an assessment of article Jacques Arcadelt by a member of the Composers project, according to its assessment criteria. This review was done by Magicpiano.

If an article is well-cited, the reviewer is assuming that the article reflects reasonably current scholarship, and deficiencies in the historical record that are documented in a particular area will be appropriately scored. If insufficient inline citations are present, the reviewer will assume that deficiencies in that area may be cured, and that area may be scored down.

Adherence to overall Wikipedia standards (WP:MOS, WP:WIAGA, WP:WIAFA) are the reviewer's opinion, and are not a substitute for the Wikipedia's processes for awarding Good Article or Featured Article status.

===Origins/family background/studies=== Does the article reflect what is known about the composer's background and childhood? If s/he received musical training as a child, who from, is the experience and nature of the early teachers' influences described?

  • good

===Early career=== Does the article indicate when s/he started composing, discuss early style, success/failure? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • good

===Mature career=== Does the article discuss his/her adult life and composition history? Are other pedagogic and personal influences from this time on his/her music discussed?

  • good

===List(s) of works=== Are lists of the composer's works in WP, linked from this article? If there are special catalogs (e.g. Köchel for Mozart, Hoboken for Haydn), are they used? If the composer has written more than 20-30 works, any exhaustive listing should be placed in a separate article.

  • good

===Critical appreciation=== Does the article discuss his/her style, reception by critics and the public (both during his/her life, and over time)?

  • good

===Illustrations and sound clips=== Does the article contain images of its subject, birthplace, gravesite or other memorials, important residences, manuscript pages, museums, etc? Does it contain samples of the composer's work (as composer and/or performer, if appropriate)? (Note that since many 20th-century works are copyrighted, it may not be possible to acquire more than brief fair use samples of those works, but efforts should be made to do so.) If an article is of high enough quality, do its images and media comply with image use policy and non-free content policy? (Adherence to these is needed for Good Article or Featured Article consideration, and is apparently a common reason for nominations being quick-failed.)

  • good, but could use more images; sound clip needs explanation.

===References, sources and bibliography=== Does the article contain a suitable number of references? Does it contain sufficient inline citations? (For an article to pass Good Article nomination, every paragraph possibly excepting those in the lead, and every direct quotation, should have at least one footnote.) If appropriate, does it include Further Reading or Bibliography beyond the cited references?

  • good

===Structure and compliance with WP:MOS=== Does the article comply with Wikipedia style and layout guidelines, especially WP:MOS, WP:LEAD, WP:LAYOUT, and possibly WP:SIZE? (Article length is not generally significant, although Featured Articles Candidates may be questioned for excessive length.)

  • adequate; lead may need to be expanded

===Things that may be necessary to pass a Good Article review===

  • Article needs more images and/or other media (MOS:IMAGE)
  • Article lead may need work (WP:LEAD)

===Summary=== This is a fine article. It provides a good picture of the life of the man, and his work and impact, in a way that I think is highly accessible. My criticisms are all relatively minor; I recommend a peer review be performed on this article, with an eye toward Feature Article Candidacy.

The article needs more images (you knew I would say that, Antandrus). I personally look for any given screenful to contain at least a part of an image. The media file, while the work is named, is not otherwise identified -- is it a madrigal or a chanson, or something else? Which book is it from? (I note that the media file's description page is also lacking this information.) There are some weasel words in the works list; given that often, little has been documented in secondary sources about the works of composers of this time, the list here is impressive enough for its near completeness.

There are minor inconsistencies in the reference list. Most authors are Last, First; a few are First Last. Some listings lack ISBNs for books that likely have them; formal reviewers sometimes complain of these things.

Article is A-class; recommend peer review to prepare for FAC. (I think a GA review will not tell enough to say how to improve the article to a FA status; only peer review and FAC itself will tell that.) Magic♪piano 03:24, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Franco-Flemish

[edit]

If Arcadelt was indeed from Liège or Namur, he would have been a Franco-Wallonian rather than a Franco-Flemish composer, as they speak and spoke French in those regions, not Flemish (= Dutch). Is there evidence that suggests he was Flemish in spite of growing up in Wallonia? On what grounds were Liège and Namur suggested? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.54.51.131 (talk) 17:18, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
