Who bought the building?
[edit]John Newell died in 1932 so how did the building get transferred to him in 1939. William Jack (his brother-in-law and business partner) died in 1910. So it would seem possible that this building could have belonged to the firm Jack & Newell (presuming it continued after their deaths) but John Newell had no role in the purchase. Could there have been a son by the same name? Kerry (talk) 02:45, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
- According to a family tree on Ancestry, there was a son John Newell (1893-1957), so this is probably the John Newell being referred to. Kerry (talk) 02:49, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
- Good catch - apologies for the linking stuff-up on my part. The Drover's Wife (talk) 10:01, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
- Might be a good idea to get an article on Jack and Newell one day - the QHR article on their Herberton store makes clear that several stores continued into the 1970s and there's a bunch of offhand references to their significance (although not terribly useful for our purposes) in Google Books. - (And this from the Mareeba Historical Society seems useful if anyone's interested - not feeling it tonight. The Drover's Wife (talk) 10:19, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
- Added to my spreadsheet of "things to do" (but not just yet). Kerry (talk) 16:46, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
