Protection
[edit]Bsrboy emailed me to request that I remove the semi-protection from this article so that he can edit it. Since he has been banned, and the protection is specifically to keep him from using sockpuppets to edit the article, I am hereby declining the request to remove protection. Bsrboy, as far as I can see, no one has accused you of vandalising this article; the problem is your sockpuppetry to evade a ban. Aleta Sing 00:22, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- Ditto, on all counts. Would he be by any chance be spamming his way through the "A" admins? Alai (talk) 01:34, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- Alai, I do believe you may be right. 23skidoo has reported the same thing, and numbers are ordered before the alphabet. Aleta Sing 01:41, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Infobox
[edit]Is there anyway I can get the wikilink off Alan Wright on here, because it doesn't actualy link to him and he doesn't have an article anyway. 86.29.141.132 (talk) 16:32, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- The Infobox was removed. This problem no longer exists. 86.29.141.77 (talk) 22:10, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm just giving this a once-over in preparation for its GA review. I restored the previous infobox back to Template:Infobox UK place, per a long-standing consensus. I'll try to make use, however, of some of the more advanced features, including a suitable static image.
- I'll continue with a breif copyedit, if that's OK. --Jza84 | Talk 22:17, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Towards GA
[edit]OK, a couple of challenges before a GA reviewer comes along:
- The references would benefit tremendously from using the Template:Cite web or Template:Cite book (where appropriate).
- geograph.org.uk is an open source project, and so isn't a reliable source I'm afraid. A substitute should be found.
- The sub-section International Links would benefit from a small introduction (simillar to something at, say, Manchester#Twin_cities_and_consulates).
- The first paragraph of Governance needs some tightening up; I respect this is constructed from elements at the (FA) Neilston, but Local government in Scotland is slightly different to England (particularly parishes and how devolution and the UK parliament functions).
- Not done I don't have a clue about local governance. 86.29.139.70 (talk) 16:08, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- The units of length need metric conversions (see the Template:Convert for details).
That's it for now. On the whole, a sound article, and quite thorough. I'll have to read through again for statement queries however. On the minus-side, the article's missing alot of depth about Ivybridge, particularly in the short history section. The following sources may help with the detail:
- http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search (search for Ivybridge as a keyword)
- http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=2617740 (for free-to-use images)
Hope that helps, --Jza84 | Talk 22:53, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've tried to use the cite web template on references 30 and 31 in Public Services. I've never used one before, so I'm not sure if they're up to scratch. The date for it appears to be wikilinked automaticaly, but there isn't an article for it. I'll leave the cite web templating on hold for the moment, until I know fully what I'm doing. By the way I found a static picture. Thanks! 86.29.141.77 (talk) 23:55, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed Realised that it uses the american system of dating. 86.29.133.238 (talk) 00:26, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- That was the same image I was thinking of using too. I'll try to help convert some of the citations over, however, at a glance, I've spotted a few more references that are likely to be scrutenised as dubious. Do you have access to any local history books? These are always the best source of material, far better than internet stuff. --Jza84 | Talk 00:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Some of these might be useful. 86.29.141.77 (talk) 00:36, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, they'd be spot on. I couldn't help with accessing them, as they're not likely to be in my local library, but they'd be the sort of thing that would improve the quality of source material (and thereby improve the article itself). Hopefully the above sources can help too however, --Jza84 | Talk 01:16, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
I've added a lot of images now. I still can't find one for education. One of Ivybridge Community College would be good, although I'm not sure if you're allowed to put a picture of a school on wikipedia. 86.29.138.224 (talk) 11:12, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Removed section on Notable People. Moved the two notable people from Ivybridge Community College to the section on Education and one notable person who won the Victoria Cross to first paragraph in History. 86.29.138.224 (talk) 12:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure what this site is for or what "Grade II" means. 86.29.138.224 (talk) 15:31, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Can I refer you to the article Listed buildings? This should explain the Grade II rating. --Jza84 | Talk 18:27, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Suburb?
[edit]I haven't mentioned anywhere in the article that Ivybridge is a suburb of Plymouth. I have mentioned many times that it is a dormitory town to Plymouth. My original thought was that Ivybridge isn't a suburb, because there is too much rural land between them. On a quick look on Google earth Ivybridge is about 2.5 miles away from Plympton (a suburb of Plymouth). I have also read about suburbs on Wikipedia:
"In the United States, Canada, and most of Western Europe the word suburb usually refers to a separate municipality, borough, or unincorporated area outside a central town or city."...
..."This division is not as prevalent in Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, where suburb merely refers to residential neighborhoods outside of the city centre whether they lie in a separate municipality or not."
I'm still none-the-wiser on this topic. I think this requires someone with greater knowledge on suburbs. Help would be much appreciated! 86.29.139.70 (talk) 16:05, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'd only call it a suburb if you can find another reliable source that does. That way you obtain objective-verifiability. From a glance, I wouldn't say it's a suburb in the normal sense. --Jza84 | Talk 09:10, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Saint John's Church
[edit]This source says "The church, dedicated to St. John, was originally erected in 1790, as a chapel-of-ease, and was consecrated as a district church in 1835;"
Whereas this source (Page 8 - Places of Worship) says "in 1789 an Anglican chapel, on the Cornwood side of the bridge and under the vicar of that parish, was opened, although it was not consecrated until 1835. Three years later it was renamed St John's Church, Ivybridge. This building was replaced by the present church, built on land to the west of the old one, in 1882, and at last Ivybridge became an ecclesiastical parish in its own right."
I'm not really sure what to put... It all gets a bit complicated. 86.29.130.0 (talk) 19:06, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Sports section
[edit]The last sentence under the sports section seems to be a subversive unkind statement about someone, not about sport in Ivybridge. Thanks Mike T —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.131.4.194 (talk) 19:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've removed it. Jolly Ω Janner 19:36, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

broken link
[edit]The Ivybridge Community Website appears to not work. Link therefore invalid. Thought I'd mention it to allow someone to fix it rather than just deleting the link Thecelt001 (talk) 08:25, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
