Sunni/Arab connection

[edit]

It is very important that this is explained correctly. It even means sometimes that we will have to revert to circumlocution to explain properly because the sources alone will not do (Sunni-Arab this, Shi'ites that, Kurds this). The BBC audience are not exactly the cognoscenti and the BBC itself, reliable here perhaps, does not always explain things accurately, as I well know. Iraq is split two ways: the ethnic threshold puts about a fifth of the population (Kurdish) north of a isobar and the four fifths Arab south. A separate boundary running in some diagonal line (south-west to north-east) separates two faiths, Sunni-Islam west and Shia east. This description is neither accurate not exhaustive as there are overflows in all directions. So, you now take out the Kurds who as an ethnic group are mostly living in an area that is autonomous and has its own internal parties. The Arabs in turn are split between the two faiths: Shia Arabs composing about 80% of non-Kurdish Iraq, the remainder being Sunni. If however a party espouses Islamism, it cannot by its nature openly serve one ethnic group only, the same way that Ba'athism is an ethnic Arab enterprise and does not distinguish between faiths, anyone can join. IAF is best then described as Sunni but - because of Iraq's pre-existing divisions and tradition for local parties - located in and serving an Arab region.
