Can I make a few suggestions as the the translation/interpretation as words translated directly don't always convey the same sense.

  • "....with peasant/Romanian motifs". In English the term "motif" is generally used in art to describe something small. One specific pattern embroidered on a blouse e.g. a stylised flower, would be referred to as "a motif". In this context it would be better to use the word "theme" i.e. Composition on a Romanian theme.
  • Red Muslin probably translates as Red Veil in this instance.
  • The use of the term "Sister" is unclear. In English a person would usually only be called "Sister Maria" or such, if she was a nun (or within a hospital context, a nurse) If she is the artist's sister or some such, could this be included?

I'm not quite sure, but I think the titles imply "motifs" as in "patterns" or "visual elements" - motive is generally used in Romanian for embroideries and the like (small things, all in all). It would probably translate best as "Romanian symbolism"? "Themes" is covered by the Romanian word teme, which seems to be distinguished from motive.
I hesitated about that one. "Tulpan" (an exceptionally rare word in modern Romanian) translates as both (muslin) veil and muslin in general. In the end, I decided not to lose the reference to "muslin", even if it's one of two possible options. The other one seemed just too vague.
Yes, that's a nun he depicted. In Romanian, the term is non-ambiguous: Măicuţa ("Little mother") before a name is strictly indicative of a nun.
With this in mind: please feel free to tweak the titles for better readability, if it should prove necessary. And thank you, for both the suggestions and the words of appreciation. Dahn (talk) 03:32, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
