Proposal to replace the History section with a cut down version from Gauge theory
I reworked the history on Gauge theory then found this page. This History is essentially a duplicate of the old version of the Gauge theory History.
I think a history of gauge theory should start with gauge theory, not the revisionist history of Maxwell and Hilbert's work. Their work did apply some aspects of what we now call gauge theory, but it was not recognized as such. If we had references that showed Weyl and later work dawning on those specific aspects of Maxwell and Hilbert then it would be fine to incorporate this as part of the background for the history of gauge theory. I suspect this connection exists but I don't have a ref and more important that is not the way the current History reads.
All of which is a long-winded way of saying I will make some major changes along the lines applied to Gauge theory. I will reduce the technical content per the title of this article. Johnjbarton (talk) 01:58, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
