Digital Opportunity Index

As far as I know, the Digital Opportunity Index is NOT a standard - it's not published as an ITU Recommendation, which is what the ITU does when it publishes what the rest of the world calls "standard". The reference I've found on the ITU website is to a study paper by invited experts that the ITU provided as input to a meeting in Korea - [1]. Oldest International Organization?

I find this claim very unlikely at best, regardless of what they say, unless they have a strangely narrow definition of "international organization". How about the Catholic Church? Or the International Committee of the Red Cross, which was founded two years earlier?

The ITU is the oldest organization in the UN family. It is not the oldest telecommunication union, there have been predecessors of the International Telegraph Union (as the ITU was called in 1865): The start of international action to regulate and develop communication can be traced back to 1849, date at which a first treaty was signed between Prussia and Austria, designed to link the telegraph systems of the two states and providing for a telegraph line running along a then existing railroad. Two Telegraph Unions were direct predecessors of the ITU : the Austro-German Telegraph Union, created in 1850, and the Western European Telegraph Union, created in 1855. Why is the Spanish translation given? Does the ITU have any special relation to any Spanish-speaking countries? Lfh 19:36, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

PR type reverted and I re-edited

DaveBurstein (talk) 05:14, 15 July 2010 (UTC) I removed stuff that was pure pr and unimportant but did not change substance. When I got to the talk page I discovered similar was done in May but was undone. I hope that the editing was not by the organization's representatives.

Updating

Since is data (both population and usage) in the list is for 2010, when will the list incorporate latest data? The statistics page of International Telecommunication Union indicates that the latest data is non-free. How and when would be the list updated? Anir1uph (talk) 01:26, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

IMT and 1 Billion subscribers

It's probably a gross overstatement to say that the ITU had much to do with the proliferation of mobile standards that led to 1 billion subscribers. Many other standards bodies had their hands in this pie, including 3GPP, the IEEE, IETF, and ETSI (to name a few). The ITU-R does facilitate spectrum coordination, and the ITU-T does standardize codecs as well as E.164 numeric country assignments, but IEEE provides for allocation of EUI-64 addresses, while ICANN and the RIRs allocate IP addresses, W3C standardizes HTML, and wireless signal processing has been advanced by 3GPP.Pigdog234 (talk) 13:48, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
