Intercalation is a special form of interbedding? I always thought these were fully interchangeable synonyms, and they are used as such in numerous scientific publications. This German-English dictionary lists the two words as synonyms. Here it indeed says that “intercalation” is a synonym of “interfingering”, but AFAIK this is not the case, and “Yahoo Answers” is not a really reliable source at all. Instead, intercalation/interbedding can be an expression of interfingering in a single outcrop. The term “interfingering”, howewer, AFAIK often is used with respect to two different formations and in a regional scale, while “intercalation”, such as “interbedding”, is used for the description of sedimentary rock successions in outcrop scale. --Gretarsson (talk) 05:37, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
