Building relocation

[edit]

The original headquarters building (built 1906) of Indiana Bell was moved in one piece in 1930 and stayed in use during the move, with water, gas, sewer, electric and phone lines kept connected. Eight stories tall, 101x34 feet, 11,000 tons of building was slowly moved 52 feet, turned 90 degrees then moved 100 feet. It took 29 days to move the building then it stood at its new location for 33 years until being demolished to make way for a larger building. http://www.b-levi.com/research/arch/vonnegut/ind_bell.php Also referenced in the March 1985 issue of Popular Mechanics.
