Cover versions

[edit]

since the first edit was reverted for not following the "formatting, date, language, etc," it has been re-submitted with the same format & dates provided along the lines of the "acceptable" entries. as far as the "high bar to inclusion" of cover songs, the Ramones Maniacs version is notable for being a tribute to a tribute that the Ramones recorded (i.e.--in the style of the Ramones cover, rather than the original), and if Joan Jett's non-charting cover meets the standard, then so does Spencer Davis' version....both artists are roughly equally famous, and neither of their versions were popular singles (you might think Joan Jett had a hit with her cover, but you're thinking of her cover of "I Love Rock n Roll" or "Crimson & Clover" or "Do You Wanna Touch Me" or maybe even "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap")...so, if you're gonna delete one, you might as well delete both.

....however, this edit was also reverted, with the following note:

The main point of WP:SONGCOVER is that Wikipedia is not intended to show every cover version that exists. Wikipedia's purpose is to summarize the important stuff about a topic. Lots of cover versions are unimportant. Binksternet (talk) 05:50, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

....my reply to that is:

the edit didn't show *every* cover of the song, since there are, no exaggeration, probably hundreds of them worldwide...on the contrary, the covers section contained *FOUR* versions: the Ramones cover, which is probably the most known aside from the original (as it appeared on their "best of" compilation, RamonesMania, which was also their highest-selling release during their lives, in addition to appearing as a B-side and a bonus track on other posthumous Ramones compilations); the Ramones Maniacs version is notable for being a tribute to the the tribute, itself somewhat of an anomaly; Spencer Davis and Joan Jett are both established artists, who issued their cover on official releases. given that a wiki page exists for each of those four releases, i'd say it meets the same standard of just about every other pop/rock Cover versions section i've seen.

....and, now, the article is basically a stub. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.103.113.222 (talkcontribs)

Not every topic on Wikipedia is going to be covered by lots of reliable sources. When that's the case, the article will be small.
Remember, every topic on Wikipedia should be based on WP:SECONDARY sources such that it is a summary of what those sources say. Looking around for sources, I see there is a blog post which we can't use because it is not considered a reliable source, there's coverage by unreliable sources such as rateyourmusic.com and secondhandsongs.com listed at WP:ALBUMAVOID, and (finally), one reliable books talking about how this song is a bubblegum hit covered by the Ramones, which is why anybody remembers it today. So perhaps you can cite The Rock Snob's Dictionary book and say that the Ramones version is important. Binksternet (talk) 06:58, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
