The random selection of chromosomes

Meiosis isn't a random method of chromosome selection. The choice of homologous chromosome 1A vs 1B has no effect on (is independent of) the selection of chromosome 2A vs 2B. Use of the term random implies that the cell is free to choose from the pool of chromosomes (1A 1B 2A 2B). Dr d12 17:17, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To say that chromosomes are transmitted intact ignores genetic recombination. Typically the mother passes to a child neither her 1A chromosome intact nor her 1B, but a spliced combination of the left end of one and the right end of the other. Ignoring recombination for the sake of simplification is reasonable except for the claim that that there are only 2^23 combinations possible from each parent. Suggest merge into Mendelian inheritance

The first sentence fails to draw a distinction between segregation and independent assortment. Maybe this article should be merged into Mendelian inheritance. Dr d12 17:17, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
