The Independence
The Independence
  • ... that the Independence steamboat (pictured) was the first propeller-driven vessel built on Lake Michigan, and the first steamboat to run on Lake Superior in 1845? — Mansfield, 1899, Vol I, p. 404;  Andreas, 1884, Vol I, p. 242;  Bowen, 1953, p. 10

  • New enough, long enough, well written and well sourced. QPQ done. Interesting hook, within rules, and the hook sources check out. Earwig found a long quote that was not properly marked as a quote, in the "Notes" section, which I have fixed by adding quotation marks around it. There is also significant unmarked copying from a newspaper article of 1853, in the last paragraph of the article, but as that is public domain and the text is neutral and sourced I think it is within rules. Other than that, no copyright problems detected. Good to go. —David Eppstein (talk) 22:54, 31 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, but what has that to do with this nomination? The Ontario was the first steamboat to run on the Great Lakes, in general. The Independence was the first steamboat to run on Lake Superior, the one lake. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 00:04, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Ontario was the first steamboat to sail on any of the Great Lakes, but not Lake Superior. The Independence, however, was the first steamboat to sail on Lake Superior, regardless if it's one of the Great Lakes. The hook for the Ontario is a general reference, i.e.Great Lakes. The hook for the Independence is a specific reference, i.e.Lake Superior, and doesn't contradict the other hook. How would you word this? -- Gwillhickers (talk) 21:41, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer the original hook, as it's more contextual and historically significant. i.e.The first steamboat to sail on Lake Superior. The hook is well under 200 characters, so I'm not seeing any issue there either. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 21:56, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand. But the way these hooks are written, someone else is sure to ask the same question as I did. Could you refine the Ontario hook and article to make it clear that it only applies to some of the Great Lakes? Yoninah (talk) 22:05, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • If we do that then we obscure the fact that the Ontario was the first steamboat to see service on 'any' of the Great Lakes. The two hooks, as written, even if compared side by side, which is not likely to happen on the main page, should not pose any confusion, however, if you are insisting I will change the hook for the Ontario. Hoping you'll reconsider. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 00:52, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I came up with a solution. I simply specified 'Lake Ontario' while still mentioning that this was the first steamboat to see service on the Great Lakes in general. See modified hook. Hope this works for all concerned. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 01:00, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great solution! Restoring tick for original hook per David Eppstein's review. Yoninah (talk) 13:15, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Gwillhickers and Yoninah: The lead of the article says 1846, while te body says 1845; which is it? Also; as written, the date is ambiguous; I would suggest the second part be modified to read "and, in 1845, the first steamboat to run on Lake Superior?" Vanamonde (Talk) 09:46, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed  Thanks for catching that. It was October '1845'. The following text already says "the first steamboat to run on Lake Superior". -- Gwillhickers (talk) 18:32, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
