Anyone on here by any chance experts on Icelandic Americans and/or Icelandic people in general?

I could use some help expanding this article.

Re: help/expansion

[edit]

I'm not a self-claimed expert, but I know some things about Iceland's emigration. I'd like to contribute to this article, but I'm still learning the ropes of Wikipedia, so be forewarned.

  • Most Americans of Icelandic descent live in areas where other Scandinavian descendants and German descendants reside (upper Midwest, mostly). There are "patches" of Icelandic descendants in the South and coastal California, too.
  • Iceland suffered famines and geologic disasters during the 18th and 19th centuries. Tens of thousands of Icelanders fled to North America during this time period (I read somewhere that the emigration accounted for 20 percent of Iceland's population at the time).
  • Leif Ericson, an Icelander, was the first known European to set foot on North America (specifically, Newfoundland) sometime around 1000 AD. Sadly, this isn't common knowledge in the U.S., probably because Leif's voyage is overshadowed by Christopher Columbus, and because it's recently discovered knowledge. Something to consider adding to this article.
  • Some quick links of possible use: 1, 2, 3

I have contributed significantly to this article specifically on the history regarding immigration from Iceland to the U.S. Some info of Icelander Leif ericson to 1900's and settlement trends. I hope I can help out more to this article.

I'm thinking of adding an image of a statue of leif Ericson at MN capital in his section is this appropriate?Hammer of the Gods27 (talk) 00:34, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change of Pictures Needed

[edit]

Neither of the current pictures of so-called "Icelandic-Americans" are appropriate for the article. Bobby Fischer was an American of German and Polish Jewish ancestry who was exiled to Iceland. If anything, he is an American-Icelander. Leif Erikson did not settle permanently in North America, nor did he even visit any area that would become the United States.--WhyteCypress 22:03, 29 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Whytecypress (talkcontribs)

Your comments certainly seem to be correct. Just replace them with pictures of some people found in articles in Category:American people of Icelandic descent. Hmains (talk) 02:44, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
