Another death
A 48 years old man from Saxony died as a result of the Ice Bucket Challenge: [1] --Sinuhe20 (talk) 20:14, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Professor Matthias Endres, Head of Neurology at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, said: "It would be conceivable [that he may have had] .. a pre-existing condition such as an aneurysm." Martinevans123 (talk) 20:27, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- So the Challenge was maybe not the cause of his death, but could have encouraged it. It is worth to say, that Steffen Klemm got four ice buckets, what was maybe to much for him. Prof. Endres said also: "It is possible, that due to the cold stimulus of the ice water the aneurysm could have been teared, which led to the deadly brain haemorrhage".--Sinuhe20 (talk) 15:18, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- Tend to agree. Other things being equal, the four ice buckets could easily be claimed to have been "the cause" of the death, or at least the main contributory factor. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:51, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

No mention...
Curious there is no mention of Gaza Rubble Challenge, "reverse the Hate" Bullet Challenge or ISIS Blood Bicket Challenge.200.48.214.19 (talk) 15:36, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- Why should those be included on this page? They lack notability and support and each falls under WP:RECENT. Meatsgains (talk) 23:25, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- The Rubble Bucket Challenge is mentioned in the list of spin-off challenges in the Impact section. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 12:51, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
Global impact
It would be interesting if there could be a section in the article on global impact vs. the impact of where the ice bucket challenge began, the United States. Also global involvement is something that wasn't touched upon that could be another section to the article. Emilyhacker (talk) 01:15, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Emilyhacker
Is this related to the Gatorade shower?
I looked this up on Wikipedia because I thought the form of the challenge might have originated with the Gatorade shower, a celebratory practical joke played on the coach of a winning sports team, members of which sneak up behind him and empty over his head the contents of one of the ubiquitous dispensers of ice-chilled Gatorade (or whatever beverage had been hydrating them during the game); but I see no mention of this decades-old tradition in this article. I found this a bit surprising, considering that the disease for which it is meant to raise awareness is famously known to have affected sports figure Lou Gehrig. B7T (talk) 16:40, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
- Unrelated. The Ice Bucket Challenge is a challenge and a charity, not a post-game sports tradition. Softlavender (talk) 23:29, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- They are both forms of slapstick if that's what B7T means. See also Pieing and Gunge. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 12:51, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Potential Additions To Ice Bucket Challenge Page
Hi Wikipedia,
I've been working on some additions for this page with User:emilyhacker. We have an ongoing draft in my sandbox here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Hsdouglas/sandbox. Please take a look at it and let us know what you think! We hope to post the actual sections into this talk page soon, but wanted to give people a chance to reach out before we did in case we are doing it all wrong.
Thanks so much!
Best, Hsdouglas (talk) 02:50, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Hsdouglas. A couple of suggestions—I would try to reduce the promotional tone of the additions. Saying that the Ice Bucket Challenge is "revered as a stroke of genius", for example, doesn't fit Wikipedia's neutral point of view.
- Also, a list of Ice Bucket Challenge participants was deleted a few months ago, so I suspect there won't be consensus for including a list of participants like the table in the "Celebrity Involvement" section (not to mention that information like that would need to be carefully sourced). —Granger (talk · contribs) 04:27, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you so much; very helpful!! Hsdouglas (talk) 22:34, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
Present tense?
Curious to note that all these months later the article still refers to the Ice Bucket Challenge in the present tense - for example "The i.b.c. ... **IS** is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head" rather than "**WAS** an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head", "Many people participate" rather than " ...participated", "The challenge encourages" rather than "encouraged" etc etc.
Are there actually people out there still doing the Ice Bucket Challenge in June 2015? 62.190.148.115 (talk) 09:13, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- Apparently people are at it in August 2015! : http://www.twcnews.com/nys/buffalo/news/2015/08/1/buffalo-als-walk-ice-bucket.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.190.148.115 (talk) 15:25, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Bay Village, Ohio bullying incident
I removed the Bay Village, Ohio bullying incident subsection. A couple of teenagers bullying another reads like news, which would fall under WP:NOTNEWS. Any users who oppose my removal, lets discuss. Meatsgains (talk) 18:37, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
- It's already been reinstated as part of a large scale reversion, but I'm not sure that's the point of WP:NOTNEWS. Looking at the rule, the idea is more to stop people either using WP as a first point of call for reporting news events to the wider world or else to stop them posting tonnes of information of the What-Celebrities-Had-For-Lunch-Today variety to an article. The Bay Village incident was an ongoing court case ending in a conviction and as such was IMHO un-mundane and un-petty enough to warrant its brief mention. (Not sure if "Scam" is the right word for an assault and battery tho!) If there were hundreds of such documented incidents relating to the IBC, then it would be inappropriate under NOTNEWS to list the whole darn lot, but not unreasonable to cite one or two examples. 86.131.191.20 (talk) 12:53, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

pointless statement
"Christian evangelist Anita Fuentes describe the Ice Bucket Challenge as a "Illuminati-Satanic ritual" on a YouTube video."
Now, I'm probably five times more critical of evangelists, Christian or X, than the next guy, but regardless of any personal belief I feel that the statement above is absolutely pointless.
Whenever any statement is given on Wikipedia that does not directly relate to and enhance the topic being discussed, I believe it is most appropriate to ask yourself: does this matter in any way? The answer I get when I ask myself that question for that statement is "Absolutely not".
So I'm gonna go ahead and delete that statement, located under the heading "Importance of the Cause".
Philologick (talk) 06:02, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry but that was referenced content made by a Wiki notable subject (with its own article.
- It was, I'll grant you, an utterly daft thing to say, but worlds have turned on even dafter more eccentric statements than that one. In any case, "daftness"/"pointlessness" is subjective and not grounds for non-includion in Wikipedia (there will always be someone who finds anything "daft" and "oointless"
- I see no reason why the criticisms section should be limited to "sensible" criticisms only. Personally I thought the only sensible criticism of the Ice Bucket Challenge was ALS's track record as cruel vivisectionists (which, on a personal note was why I donated my money from my own Ice Bucket Challenge to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home instead of ALS. Not because I'm a mad animal rights fan but because it was the only criticism that actually made any coherent sense.) So if it's okay to delete criticisms which are "pointless" then I could feel free to delete all the stuff about "Misuse of water" etc because *I* think that was all pointless... 62.190.148.115 (talk) 10:40, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

- Okay then, I have taken the Listen To The Daft Old Bat Prattle On Challenge and, mercifully, she says it quite early on at 04:01 so I have input that time in the reference. She actually says that it "seems to resemble" the ritual, so I have modified the quote accordingly until some kind soul can go through the whole 45min and find out if she says that it IS a ritual. But I warn ya, by the end of the 45min, you'll be wanting to see Ms Fuentes do the Ice Bucket Challenge - in fact you'll be GAGGING to administer it to her yourself! 2.24.71.212 (talk) 11:47, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

- The other references we have there in terms of criticism are from commentators in national / international news outlets. Just having a wikipedia page doesn't necessarily mean every opinion you have is worth putting in an encyclopedia, in the same way there's not a list of every notable person / celebrity who did the challenge. PaulWicks (talk) 13:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC).
- The claim circulated pretty widely on social media, even among sceptics who used it, somewhat tongue in cheek, to cover over the reality that they could not handle having slapstick comedy administered to themselves, particularly not on camera. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 13:50, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

2016 Ice Bucket Challenge?
Discussion
Is there going to be one? The people organising this event seem to think there will! 62.190.148.115 (talk) 12:47, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
- Nothing's been announced yet but people have been going ahead, for example this and this as well as the event you mentioned. Either way, I think the article opening para should remain as present tense - unless it ever becomes physically impossible for people to pour buckets of ice water over themselves/each other. 2.24.71.80 (talk) 06:56, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- Keep an eye on this Facebook search for possible 2016 revival material for the page: [2] 17:06, 2 August 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.190.148.115 (talk)
- The only reliable sources provided to support the 2016 challenge would be this and this. The link to Mercy Health is not relevant to this page. Meatsgains (talk) 17:42, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- Also, the link to Facebook is not an RS either. Meatsgains (talk) 17:43, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yes I know it's not a source. That's not the point. It's a good place for keeping an eye out for useful material and fresh developments. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 09:31, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
So far. 3/4 of the way through the month, the picture is that no major ALS association is running a formal 2016 IBC campaign, but plenty of individuals and small groups (schools, sports clubs etc) are giving "Round Three" a go, including one Australian member of Parliament. One interesting aspect is that some people are giving it a new twist by using all manner of messy substitutes for the ice cubes including sliced fuit/vegetables and whipped cream and not letting the victim know what substance until the bucket is poured "the "What's In Your Bucket?" variant on the challenge).
What's really needed is for a mainstream source to do a roundup of the entire picture, but none seems to be forthcoming (presumably because they DON'T want it to go viral again lest they themselves get nominated ... ) 62.190.148.115 (talk) 09:17, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Where are you getting this information from? Can you provide a link to any source? Thanks. Meatsgains (talk) 17:10, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- I'm summarising what's been coming through on the Facebook search. As I said, there's not very much official about this year's challenge.
- There's a source here about the MP in Australia:
- And here's a source about the "What's In Your Bucket" twist on the challenge
- Other than that it's individuals and small groups posting their 2016 IBCs direct to social media 62.190.148.115 (talk) 17:54, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Content from this source might be worth including if we can find another RS covering it, otherwise it will be WP:UNDUE. The first source you provided is not reliable. Meatsgains (talk) 16:58, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- Alternatives for the first source: [3] [4]. There seem to be quite a few other possibilities on Google (search: Barnaby Joyce Ice Bucket Challenge 2016). What exactly is the reliability issue with the Ainformers site? 62.190.148.115 (talk) 09:26, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- P.S. I did a Google search for the "What's In Your Bucket" challenge variant and came up with a couple of complimentary sources for the Totonto Sun piece - [5] and [6]. If they're no good, maybe some of the other entries on the Google search might do instead. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 16:06, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- P.P.S. Source about an attempt on the world IBC record in Buffalo NY. I spotted the story on the FB search and then Googled it to find a suitable write-up of the attempt. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 16:20, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Draft Section
Okay, we are now at the end of August. Here is my draft section for the 2016 challenge:
- 2016
- Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce performed the 2016 challenge, nominating his colleague Michael McCormack the Minister for Small Business and in charge of the controversial 2016 Census.[1][2].[3] Fellow Australian MP Adam Marshall also performed the challenge.[3] A new variant on the challenge this year, the "What's In Your Bucket?" challenge featured the replacement of the ice cubes with any number of other substances, including tomato ketchup, spaghetti, pickles, beer, baby powder, beer, coffee and sand.[4][5][6] A further attempt on the world record for the largest mass Ice Bucket Challenge in Buffalo, New York drew 650 participants, 71 short of the existing record of 721.[7]

"2016" will be a section subheader and a "2015" subheader will be added for all the existing content for the Revival. The "Revival" header will be pluralised to read "Revivals" (and the first sentence of the article will go back to being present tense.)
I also propose to add the following sentence to the final paragraph of the article introduction: "Accordingly, people performed the challenge again in summer 2016" possibly with refs from the above paragraph. In future years, this can be amended to "2016 and 2017", "2016-2018" etc and eventually "each year from 2016 onwards" or somesuch.
I am going to post a message about this to User:Meatsgains's talk page, inviting feedback below. If I get no reply from Meatgains or anyone else by this time next week, I shall assume everyone is happy with it and post it to the article. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 10:26, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- The content you are wanting to add is supported in reliable sources. I do not oppose this addition. Meatsgains (talk) 00:01, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
- Done - okay, all added to the article. Thanks for the review. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 09:08, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

How come the bullying incident got removed from the article? It was a serious and well-known situation that even celebrities got involved! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cineplex (talk • contribs) 01:55, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- More than likely because it was WP:UNDUE. Meatsgains (talk) 02:16, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Personally I don't think it was Undue Weight- it was only about 3-4 lines long and properly referenced. It's not like it was reaching War And Peace proportions. Anyway, as far as I can see WP:UNDUE is more to do with minority opinions on subjects, not minor details properly worked into a relevant context. For what it's worth, I think the swearing toddler incident also deserves a mention on the page. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 10:39, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

- Lead section: concise summary, fix grammatical errors
- Clear section: outline is succinct, and the order is effective, specifically writing the criticism towards the end
- Balance coverage: good balance of information stated within the articles, however it would be beneficial to add why certain social media platforms were used as compared to others. Is it because of the amount of followers? Convenience? More user-friendly?
- Neutral content: neutral point of view, language is balanced
- Reliable sources: some links were linked to other Wikipedia articles, which I am not sure if it is reliable if the third parties sources are not reliable
- Grammar: "is an activity that involves dumping a buck of ice...", differences in utilizing the word 'for' and 'in'

- Lead section: the main point of the topic is stated in the lead, contains most important information; however, it should mention which social media platforms influenced it to become viral
- Clear section: outline is well organized. The "Rules" section should be mentioned before the "Revivals."
- Balance: There was a good balance of information. The length of sections were appropriate enough for their specific topic. The proponent and opposing sides are mentioned.
- Neutrality: The article remains neutral, with unbiased language
- Reliable sources: Many sources were from websites or news articles that could potentially be unreliable.
- Grammar/Spelling: Not many grammar or spelling mistakes

The edits made by the students are relevant to the topic and remain neutral in tone. The citations led to web sources, most often online news articles, that could be considered credible on Wikipedia. Adding a section about the criticism of the Ice Bucket Challenge regarding the water waste was a smart decision, in my opinion, as a large part of the virality of the challenge did deal with the backlash from environmentalist perspectives. Are there any statistics regarding the percentage of the population or proportion of people who were in favor of the challenge versus against it that you could add to the page? Great work :) Devinasen (talk) 21:53, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

The article's subject is clearly stated and explained. The outline is organized and considers, it does not use filler words and is straight to the point. The article remains neutral throughout and only shares fact. The sourcing is accurate, reliable and there is no plagiarism. There were little to no spelling mistakes. Well, so far we're off to a flying start with the whole South Korean K pop IBC for a local ALS hospital. What else? 2.28.124.67 (talk) 18:31, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

- US Senator Joan Lovely added to the section. Otherwise it's just followups on the S Korea and Yonkers Casino stories, citizens' IBC videos and local ALS chapter events. See you all next year 95.148.20.28 (talk) 09:49, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Okay, that will do for this year. Next year we should merge the 2016-2019 sections and start a new section "2020 onwards". 86.169.205.188 (talk) 10:31, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

merge revival yearly sections
As per my suggestion two years ago, currently viewable in Archive 2. Sorry I didn't get on with this last year but the pandemic was a distraction for a lot of things in all our lives.Romomusicfan (talk) 11:35, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
- 2022 was just another year, but the Empire City Casino event got an article, so I added that to the 2020 Onwards section. The 31st July date seemed a bit ironic to me in the light of the 2015 slogan "Every August Until A Cure" so I highlighted it.Romomusicfan (talk) 11:30, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
