- ... that 145 years ago today, two police officers were murdered (memorial cross pictured) by two brothers who had poached just two pheasants and a jay? Source: "both admitted their guilt, and said that they were returning home after shooting two pheasants and a jay" [1]

- Comment: If this gets promoted I'd like it to be held for 11 December to tie in with the anniversary... MIDI (talk) 21:05, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Overall: Shame this won't make December 11, it's a fine piece of work. I notice the source says "I have been and killed two plicemen" and you corrected the spelling - do you think the source was wrong, this wasn't the dialect? GRuban (talk) 20:24, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, @GRuban:. I suspect it's a typo – in the source, there is an errant mid-sentence double space so I'm inclined to think it was introduced when transcribing. That said, I've found another source which has a slightly different wording of the quote, but without the [mis]spelling, so I've added that in. In terms of the hook:
- ALT1: ... that 145 years ago, two police officers were murdered (memorial cross pictured) by brothers who had poached just two pheasants and a jay?
- ALT2: ... that in December 1876, two police officers were murdered (memorial cross pictured) by brothers who had poached just two pheasants and a jay?
- MIDI (talk) 14:25, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
- Either of those will do; I have the faintest preference for ALT1 (assuming this doesn't take another month to appear on DYK!). --GRuban (talk) 14:52, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
