Human Billboards and communication in the urban scene (between motorized & non-motorized participants)
[edit]Writing from Southern California, I think Human Billboards on the sidewalk, performing for passing cars, are examples for a disturbed communication between pedestrians and car drivers. This is a new phenomenon, different from the sidewalk sandwich men who "perform" for other pedestrians (in spitting distance) in the 19th century and on Oxford street. My inkling is that the performer placed next to the car traffic, in the crazy gherkin costume, dressed up as superman, throwing signs, exhibits a new pathology of human communication, structured by the presence of cars and streets, by the absence of pedestrians on the sidewalk, and speaking to the sickening impact of cars and streets.

May I suggest that "Sandwich board man" would be a more suitable term - sorry can't sign this as I am just a reader.
