Structure

[edit]

It could be just me, but I highly doubt the picture in the structure section is actually of side-saddle, given that they're not using side-saddles,have a leg each side of the saddle and most importantly, the picture's notes say that it is a saddlebred class. However, if someone could please double check this? Akebai (talk) 12:34, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The photo in "Structure" is a saddle seat rider and is labeled as such. The sidesaddle photo is down in the next section and also is properly labeled. It is currently correct. Montanabw(talk) 20:16, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Classes confusion

[edit]

There seems to be a bit of confusion about what classes are offered in shows. The "Horse shows within various nations" part talks about "Horse shows in the United States", but leaves out all English shows. (Except that the first example given, the Royal, is primarily an English show.) Then the next section, "Structure", starts with an extensive discussion of English classes. Huh?

Seems like this whole part could use a bit of re-writing. T-bonham 08:01, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Probably, the whole article needs restructuring. One problem is that there is TREMENDOUS variation in the terminology used in the USA and the UK. There is also a lot of terminology variation by discipline, region, breed, etc...just the USEF rulebook is about three inches think when you get it in hardcopy! Also, the UK people sort of need to weigh in with their own stuff. Ditto for the Australians, etc. Because so much terminology is region-specific, it takes a "native speaker" to do it. But I do think that it is a waste of bandwidth to have the huge table of ribbon colors as the biggest section of the article, though it's a nice chart (wonder if someone could save it as a .png or something and click to enlarge it for those who care...? It is interesting trivia, freaked me out the first time I won a class in Canada and got a RED ribbon! (grin)) Montanabw(talk) 16:27, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ribbons

[edit]

I would suggest replacing the long list of Ribbon colors with a table, like this:

Prize Ribbon Colors
Australia Canada Czech
Republic
The
Netherlands
New Zealand Norway United
Kingdom
United States
1st blue red yellow orange red red, blue, white red blue 1st
2nd red blue white red blue red blue red 2nd
3rd white white red white yellow blue yellow yellow 3rd
4th green yellow blue blue green green green white 4th
5th yellow green green green pink yellow pink pink 5th
6th brown pink violet pink purple purple green 6th
7th purple any other color purple 7th
8th brown brown 8th
9th orange gray 9th
10th light blue light blue 10th
Champion blue,
red,
white
red,
blue,
white
red,
white,
blue
blue,
red,
yellow
Champion
Reserve
Champion
blue,
white,
yellow
red,
yellow,
white
Reserve
Champion

Also, Germany, Ireland, & France are major horse show countries, but are not in this list.

Comments, please?

I'm OK with it, with a couple suggestions:

  1. Put the chart (and related commentary) at the bottom of the article so it isn't too garish-looking on the page.
  2. See if we can (maybe we can't) make the boxes a little narrower in height, but a touch wider (I'm no good at wiki charts yet...)
  3. Then maybe put the nations that use the same color scheme (Canada, UK, NZ, etc.) all in the same column

I saw tweak it as you can and slap it in there! Montanabw 01:23, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Class?

[edit]

This article uses the jargon term "class" without defining it. Needs a little work there. Fountains of Bryn Mawr 02:49, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whole article is sort of a mishmash of assorted odds and ends. If someone has the time to expand it and tie things together, that would be helpful. Trick is being careful to stay general enough to cover "generic" horse shows and not get too region or nation-specific. If you have good ideas, go for it, just note that there is some good work in individual sections and not toss the baby with the bathwater. (or, put differently, not all horse shows run like those on the east coast! (grin)) Montanabw 04:48, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History Section

[edit]

I realize at this point the history section just looks like a plug for one show, but I do plan to flesh out the section further in the next few days... although I agree we do not want a long list of horse shows in this article, this particular show is relevant to the history of horse shows as it was the first horse show in the U.S. --AeronM (talk) 00:46, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May I make a suggestion? Write the section you want here on the talk page or in a sandbox, that way it goes in all of one piece and doesn't invite every horse show in the planet to come along and add themselves. Don't forget to hunt down information on the first shows in Europe, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I don't have any information at hand here, but I do know of a few historical horse show photos that are Public Domain I could scan in for usage. I do think a history of horse shows section is a good idea. Ealdgyth - Talk 01:02, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the paragraph again until this issue is resolved here. I am very serious that these things multiply like coat hangers in a closet, and all it takes is one! I like Ealdgyth's idea that a history section may be appropriate, but we should also invite people like Katdib and Cgoodwin and Culneacreann (sp?) to provide information on other nations. Also don't want to repeat material that is already in the United States Equestrian Federation article. Even better yet, we should consider creating a List of horse shows, sort of like List of Rodeos that would allow everyone to add in their favorite bit. Montanabw(talk) 02:18, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and for what it's worth, I did a bit of fast research, it may indeed be true that Upperville was the first horse-only show in the US, (though an event's own website is nice to cross-verify with other sources when possible) I saw that the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden dates to 1883, and claims simply to be the oldest INDOOR horse show. Just let's think this through and work out the section here. Montanabw(talk) 02:30, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found a 1908 picture from Fort Worth of a halter class, I believe this is a forerunner and/or the Fort Worth Stock Show. It's PD so we can use it, would that be of interest? Might be some of British shows in some of the Arabian horse stuff also. Ealdgyth - Talk 17:21, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Let's keep it posted here and work it in. I like it! Sometimes a little mini-gallery of photos can be parked on a talk page while folks are working on an article, and the best that is found can be plopped into the article as needed. Old photos of the National Horse Show would be cool, also. Montanabw(talk) 04:06, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
