Traditional name in English is Fuenterrabia

[edit]

As the Books NGram Viewer tool shows, the traditional name in English is «Fuenterrabia» (without an accent), which is an adaptation of the place name in Spanish, not in Basque (Hondarribia) or French (Fontarrabie). --Pompilos (talk) 08:58, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the data doesn't seem to agree. Ignoring pre-2000 data, even if you add together the two Spanish spellings, the sum is slightly below the total for Hondarribia. Also, given the extremely low instances on ngram, turning to Google for a moment, if you search for "Fuenterrabia" -ciudad (to filter out Spanish) you get about 7k ghits whereas "Hondarribia" -hiria -ciudad (to filter out Basque and Spanish results) returns just over 2m ghits. A non-trivial number of the Fuenterrabia instances on top of that are references to the names of historical paintings.
To me, both actually suggest that we should move this page to Hondarribia to reflect the modern reality, especially since now that Hondarribia is the official name, it's usage is hardly going to decrease overall. Akerbeltz (talk) 10:36, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
