Copyrighted

[edit]

Hi! I've recently joined wikipedia to edit article on charities and ran across this article. After reading through a bit of it, it was obvious that the text was written as a newsletter or company website. I checked and it looks like a lot of the text comes from [1] this newsletter published in 2002 meaning that it didn't come from Wikipedia. Is this a problem and what do you do when you find a copyright problem? ServeForLife (talk) 18:08, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing it out and tagging the article; especially giving the URL you found the text at. For an explanation of how to handle copyright problems, see Wikipedia:Cv101. This PDF didn't appear to have a copyright, so you must assume it is copyrighted and not compatible with Wikipedia's CC-BY-SA license, see WP:COPYPASTE for more on that. Copyrights can get tricky and confusing, if you have any questions, let myself or another editor know.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:31, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Updated to Home-Start Worldwide

[edit]

{{connected contributor}} I am unpaid Trustee of the affiliated charity Home-StartUK.

I came across this very outdated wikipedia page, which need to be improved by someone with a good knowledge of the current state of the Home-Start movement worldwide and / or the small umbrella body Home-Start Worldwide. However the history of the movement initiated by Margaret Harrision stands. Philip Sugarman (talk) 16:33, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A drafted a page on Home-Start UK which was declined by an editor as reading like an advert. He/She also removed all the updating I did for this page. I have listened to the various points, and updated this page again. What is odd is the title "Home -Start International, which was an umbrella body which became defunct many years ago. "Home-Start Worldwide" would be better, as at least this exists, but it is a very small and fairly inactive outfit compared to the large national associations. I think the best title for the page to actually make it useful and self-explanatory is simply "Home-Start".— Preceding unsigned comment added by Philip Sugarman (talkcontribs) 17:46, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of Home-Start

[edit]

Reading the article, I am not sure of the purpose of Home-Start. Reading the sources, however, suggest it is an effort to combat domestic violence, but I am still not certain who the perpetrators of said violence are; all of this could use some clarity if an interested editor is willing to provide it in a WP:NPOV manner. BilledMammal (talk) 16:47, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Although some local Home-Start charities in the UK do provide services around domestic violence, this is not the primary purpose of Home-Start. Rather it is the improve the life chances of children by supporting parents in the early years. It is based on a home visiting model usually run by volunteers. [edit]
  • What I think should be changed: There could be a second paragraph under operating model to explain better what home-start does. It might say "According to Lord Joseph, commenting on parenting and children's charities in the UK, Home-Start volunteers "are themselves parents, carefully selected and given a short training. .. Each volunteer aims to become the resourceful friend of any family who so wishes, with at least one small child, often self-referred." :
  • The description by John Bowbly is important because he is such an authoritative name in child development, but Lord Joseph's account is helpful about the practicalities:
  • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button):
